Minnesota Crookston Defense Holds St. Cloud State to 10 Points in First Half but Huskies Prevail 38-0

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Crookston football team held St. Cloud State to just 10 points in the first half, but the Huskies would come out of the break and score 28 points to pick up a 38-0 win. The Golden Eagle defense performed well in the first half as they limited the Huskies to just 140 yards in the first half. Minnesota Crookston's offense struggled overall as the St. Cloud State defense held the Golden Eagles to just 114 yards on the day.

Minnesota Crookston falls to 0-2 with Saturday's loss. St. Cloud State moves to 2-0 with the victory.

The Golden Eagles had four sacks defensively, all coming in the first half. Minnesota Crookston's defense held St. Cloud State to 399 yards with 285 of those yards coming in the second half. Minnesota Crookston's defense looked to captain Will Cross (R-Sr., LB, Turtle Lake, Wis.) with nine tackles and 2.5 tackles for loss. Reece Walno (R-So., DL, Spearfish, S.D.) added seven tackles, while Logan Huso (Sr., DL, Eagan, Minn.) chipped in six tackles. Joe Warner (Sr., DL, St. Louis Park, Minn.), Austin Steele (R-So., LB, La Crosse, Wis.), Trevor Long, Jr. (R-Sr., LB, Brooklyn Park, Minn.) and Ben Branscom (R-Jr., DL, Woodbury, Minn.) all picked up sacks. The Golden Eagles tallied four sacks for the second-straight  game.

At quarterback, Jalin Scott (Sr., QB, Houston, Texas) went 3-of-11 with 49 yards. Tristan Robbins (So., QB, Muskegon, Mich.) was 4-of-6 for 30 yards. Their top target was Nathan Coy (R-So., WR, Sun Prairie, Wis.) with three catches for 28 yards, while Jonattan Mudd (Sr., WR, Gardena, Calif.) added a catch for 19 yards.

On the ground, Boyce Harr (R-So., RB, Spearfish, S.D.) led the way with six carries for 19 yards.

St. Cloud State was led by Dwayne Lawhorn, who was 12-of-20 for 182 yards on the game. His top target was Tanner Teige with five catches for 76 yards, while Nate Gimza added four grabs for 51 yards. On the ground, Paris Howell led the way with six carries for 47 yards and a touchdown. Devin Vouk finished with 12 carries for 57 yards.

Defensively, Zack Stecklein paced St. Cloud State with five tackles and 2.5 tackles for loss.

Defense was the theme early on in Saturday's game. The Golden Eagles came up with a big stop on St. Cloud State's first offensive possession as Steele came up with a big sack to halt to the drive at the St. Cloud State 48.

The Huskies were set up in a strong position after they came away with a defensive stop on the ensuing drive. A punt return of 21 yards by James Smith set up the Huskies at the Minnesota Crookston 41. St. Cloud State moved into scoring position on a 31-yard pass from Lawhorn to Teige. The Huskies would score on a two-yard quarterback keeper by Lawhorn to put St. Cloud State ahead 7-0.

A 27-yard return by Wyatt K. Shedrick, III (R-Fr., WR, Scottsdale, Ariz.) on the ensuing kickoff set Minnesota Crookston up at the 32 yard line. After a five-yard pass to Coy by Robbins, the Golden Eagles got an extra 15 yards following a horse collar on a rush by Shedrick. Minnesota Crookston moved down to St. Cloud State 39 on a 13-yard rush by Robbins. After a seven-yard pass to Coy, Robbins found Shedrick in the middle of the field for a first down at the Huskies 25. St. Cloud State halted the drive led by a sack as the Golden Eagles were forced to attempt a field goal. Jared McLemore (So., K, Lucas, Texas) missed the 44-yard attempt wide left as the score remained St. Cloud State 7, Minnesota Crookston 0.

On the following drive for the Huskies, Gimza opened things up with a 15-yard rush. On the following play, Branscom came off the right side and sack Lawhorn to push St. Cloud State back to their own 37. The Huskies overcame the sack as Lawhorn found Gimza for a 22-yard strike to move into Golden Eagle territory. St. Cloud State's drive stalled at the Minnesota Crookston 39 as the Golden Eagles got the ball back.

Pinned with their backs to their own goal line, Scott found Mudd for a 19-yard gain so the Golden Eagles could breathe a little easier at their own 29-yard line. However, a botched hand-off to Boyce Harr resulted in a fumble recovery by Louis Williams to set the Huskies up at Minnesota Crookston's 28-yard line.
The Huskies were able to move the ball down to Minnesota Crookston's 13 but the defense was able to hold and force the field goal attempt. A 30-yard attempt by Adam Stage extended the lead to 10-0 for St. Cloud State.

The Golden Eagles were unable to do much with the ball on the following drive as they went four-and-out and gave the ball back to the Huskies. A 40-yard punt by Nathan McRoberts (R-Fr., P, Kabetogama, Minn.) changed field position and move the ball back to St. Cloud State's 33.

Minnesota Crookston's defense came up with a four-and-out on the following drive as they were able to get the ball back quickly to the offense.

A personal foul on first down on the following drive set Minnesota Crookston up at their own 39. On the following play, Robbins found Andy Groebner (So., WR, Andover, Minn.) for his first catch of the season to move the ball down to Minnesota Crookston's 45. The Golden Eagles got into opposing field position as Robbins made something out of nothing with an eight-yard rush for a first down. Unfortunately a holding call on the following play moved Minnesota Crookston back to their own 44. The holding set Minnesota Crookston back as they forced to punt despite several positive plays.

Minnesota Crookston came away with big defensive plays again led by a Joe Warner sack and a Terrance Nicholson shoestring tackle to stop the St. Cloud State drive.

The Golden Eagles were stopped on their offensive drive as Scott was sacked at the one-yard line, forcing a McRoberts punt from the edge of the end zone.

The Huskies would fair catch it at the Minnesota Crookston 27 as they were set up in great field position. The Golden Eagle defense would come up with a huge stop again as Long got a crucial sack on third down to move the ball back to the Minnesota Crookston 29. Stage was forced to attempt a 46-yard field goal, which was wide right to keep the score at St. Cloud State 10, Minnesota Crookston 0.

Minnesota Crookston had a few chances with limited time remaining, but were unable to come up with any points going into the break.

The Golden Eagles went into the break down just 10-0 to the Huskies with a strong defensive performance. Minnesota Crookston had an impressive four sacks as Warner, Steele, Long, and Branscom all came away with sacks. The Golden Eagle defense held to just 10 points and limited the Huskies to 140 yards of offense. Minnesota Crooskton was led by Steele, Walno, and Skyler Quinn (R-Jr., DL, Evansville, Minn.) with four tackles apiece at the break.

Offensively, Robbins was the quarterback was effectively able to move the offense. Robbins was 4-of-5 for 30 yards passing. He added 14 yards on the ground. Scott was 1-of-7 for 19 yards passing and had nine rushes for a net of 20 yards. Mudd led the receivers with one reception for 19 yards, while Coy had two catches for 12 yards. Minnesota Crookston had 91 yards of offense in the opening half.

The Huskies were guided by Lawhorn, who went 8-of-14 for 101 yards passing. Gimza led the Huskies through the air with four receptions for 51 yards. Teige added three catches for 48 yards. Blando was the leading rusher with eight rushes for 32 yards.

Defensively, the Huskies looked to Zack Stecklein with four tackles and two sacks.

Out of the break, St. Cloud State moved the ball down the field led by a 12-yard pass from Lawhorn to Gimza as the Huskies got the ball down to the St. Cloud State 22. On fourth down, Lawhorn found a Teige for a 20-yard gain down to the Minnesota Crookston two-yard line. Blando went in on the next play on a two-yard rush to extend the lead to 17-0 early in the third quarter.

Minnesota Crookston was unable to get much going on the offensive side for their first drive of the half as a sack by Joe Carpenter and Devin Krzanowski put the ball back to the Minnesota Crookston 19.

The Huskies were able to move the ball down to the two yard line as Lawhorn found John Solberg on a 45-yard strike. St. Cloud State went in on a two-yard touchdown rush by Curtwan Evans.

Minnesota Crookston was stalled out again offensively forcing a punt deep in their own territory. McRoberts dropped the snap on the punt and was tackled at his own four yard line, setting the Huskies up in great position.

St. Cloud State scored on a two-yard rush by Paris Howell to push the advantage out to 31-0.

The Huskies moved the lead to 38-0 on a 15-yard touchdown run by Lawhorn.

The Golden Eagles came away with a defensive stop after not being able to move the ball much offensively led by a quarterback hurry on third down by Long.

Minnesota Crookston was able to get the ball moving on the following drive. Scott found Coy for a 16-yard strike. Two plays later, Boyce Harr moved the ball 10 yards down the field for a first down. On the next play, Scott found Kyler Banks 14 yards down to the Minnesota Crookston 43. A pass interference call on the Huskies moved the ball into St. Cloud State territory at the 45. However, the drive would stall out led by a sack by Luke Dunsmoor and Tyler Turiff.

St. Cloud State would run the clock down the rest of the way as they took a 38-0 win on Saturday.

Minnesota Crookston returns home for two-straight weeks starting with the Hub Cap Game Sat., Sept. 21 at 12 p.m., against Bemidji State University.
