Two Quick Goals in First Half leads to Minnesota Duluth Win over Minnesota Crookston

Crookston, Minn.—The University of Minnesota Crookston women's soccer team was at home for the first time in the 2018 season, hosting the University of Minnesota Duluth.

It was a good crowd on hand as the Golden Eagles looked to get the first win of the season, but the Bulldogs would have other plans Friday afternoon in Crookston.

It was a defensive battle for much of the first half, as the Golden Eagles would fight off multiple chances by the Bulldogs. Puttin (Jr. Rogers, Minn.) made a handful of saves, before the Bulldogs would score off of a corner kick from Lizzy Fontes to goal-scorer Logan Nash in the 31st minute of the first half for a 1-0 lead.

The Bulldogs would then punch in another one two minutes later off of a goal from Julia Osborne in the 33rd minute for a 2-0 lead. That would be the lead for the Bulldogs going into the halftime break.

UMD would put another one in the back of the net, this time from Hannah Caldwell, to make it 3-0. That goal was assisted by Destiny Schmitz, and Julia Osborne.

Minnesota Crookston applied pressure late in the second half, but it wasn't enough as the Bulldogs came out of Crookston a 3-0 victor.

Holly Kaboord led the way for the Bulldogs with four shots, and Nan Glinsek, and Natalie St. Martin each had three shots. Lizzy Fontes was the only starter to notch a point, as she finished with an assist in the match. It was all substitutes who put the ball in the back of the net, as Julia Osborne, Logan Nash, and Hannah Caldwell didn't start, but played a big part in the UMD victory.

For the Golden Eagles, Mataya Mierzejewski (Fr. Woodbury, Minn.), and Shonali Pierce (So. Streamwood, Ill.) each had a shot in the match. Puttin, and Athena DiMario Done (So. Windsor, Ontario) split the time in net, with Puttin and DiMario Done each getting a half in goal. Each had six save a piece during the match.

Minnesota Duluth outshot Minnesota Crookston 26-2, and also had six more corner kicks than the Golden Eagles.

With the win, Minnesota Duluth moves to 2-3 overall, and 1-1 in the NSIC, while Minnesota Crookston falls to 0-5 overall and 0-2 in the NSIC.

The Golden Eagles are back in action this Sunday as they play host to St. Cloud State University. That match is set for 1 p.m.
