Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Hunter Plante

Second Half goal surges St. Cloud State over Minnesota Crookston

Crookston, Minn.—The University of Minnesota Crookston women's soccer team hosted St. Cloud State University for a Sunday matinee.

It was a defensive battle, with both teams playing tight defense for the majority of the game, and the game might come down to one goal. That is exactly what happened as the Huskies scored the first, and only goal of the match early in the second half.

That would be enough for the Huskies as they defeated the Golden Eagles today 1-0. The win for SCSU boosts their record to 2-3-1 overall and 2-1 in the NSIC. The loss for the Golden Eagles drops their record to 0-6-0 overall, and 0-3-0 in the conference.

The game started out with both teams trying to figure each other out, as there would not be that many great chances for either team. The Huskies would eventually generate more chances near the end of the first half, but Olivia Puttin (Jr. Rogers, Minn.) was strong in net most of the game.

The match would remain scoreless at the halftime break. The two zeroes that both teams saw at the end of the first half was nothing new for these programs. In the only meeting between the Huskies and Golden Eagles last season, it was a scoreless draw.

St. Cloud State did all they could to make sure they headed back home with a win. The pressure was there for the Huskies, and they finally got one past Puttin at the 52nd minute as Claire Shea scored her first goal of the season on an assist from Sara Magno, to make it 1-0.

That is how the game would end, as the Golden Eagles would put pressure on the Huskies, but couldn't get the ball past Zoe Welsh.

For the Golden Eagles, Olivia Puttin made 13 saves on the afternoon, and played the entire game in goal. Maggee Hodgdon (Fr. Newberg, Ore.) recorded the only shot on the afternoon.

For SCSU, they were led in shots by Monica Majeski, and Maria Kass with five a piece, and the goal scorer Claire Shea was second on the team in shots with four.

As a team, the Huskies outshot Minnesota Crookston 22-1. The corner kicks were won by the Golden Eagles who had three compared to the Huskies one.

Minnesota Crookston will look to come away with two wins with trips to Winona State, and Upper Iowa. That match with Winona State is set for 3 p.m. on Friday afternoon. The match with Upper Iowa is set for 1 p.m. on Sunday afternoon in Fayette, Iowa.
