VIRGINIA, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Crookston fell in a pair of matches this weekend at Virginia Indoor Tennis Center in Virginia, Minn. Minnesota Crookston fell 8-1 to University of Mary Sat., April 1 and 9-0 to Minnesota State University Moorhead Sun., April 2.
The Golden Eagles fall to 0-13 on the 2017 season with the pair of losses. MSU Moorhead improved to 11-5 on the weekend. University of Mary improved to 4-10 on the weekend.
Minnesota Crookston was led by a singles win at the No. 1 slot by
Whitney Erickson (Jr., Spring Valley, Minn.). Erickson won the first set over Meredith Holt, 6-4. She would fall 2-6, but would take the third set 10-5 over U-Mary.
In doubles, the No. 1 pair of
Whitney Erickson and
Reanne Erickson (So., Fargo, N.D.) fell 8-3 to Lisa Anderson and Shanna Stevenson. At the No. 2 slot,
Hanna Ruckheim (Fr., Parkers Prairie, Minn.) and
Tien Nguyen (Sr., Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam) fell 8-0 to Danielle Wolf and Jennifer Stover. U-Mary would take the third doubles by forfeit.
At the No. 2 singles slot,
Reanne Erickson fell 6-1, 6-0 to Antastasia Bruss. At No. 3 singles, Ruckheim dropped her match 6-0, 6-0 to Cristina Bremar. At the No. 4 slot, Nguyen fell 6-0, 6-0 to Anderson. The Marauders would take No. 5 and No. 6 singles by forfeit.
"Whitney played a very steady singles match," said Head Coach
Lee Meier. "She put a lot of balls on the court. She was able to battle back in the second set to make it close and then would take the third set to pick up the win."
In Sunday's match, Minnesota Crookston would open doubles with a 8-3 loss at the No. 1 slot as
Whitney Erickson and
Reanne Erickson fell 8-3 to Alexis Konecne and Olivia Keelin. At No. 2 doubles, Ruckheim and Nguyen fell 8-1 to Maia Wendel and Ricquel Ramsbottom. The Dragons would win No. 3 doubles due to forfeit.
In singles,
Whitney Erickson would fall 6-0, 6-3 to Jessamy Jones at the No. 1 slot. At No. 2 singles, Maria Moral Carretero upended
Reanne Erickson, 6-0, 6-0. At the No. 3 spot, Danielle Unruh picked up a 6-0, 6-1 win over Ruckheim. At the No. 4 slot, Nguyen fell 6-0, 6-0 to Emma Zamora. The Dragons would take No. 5 and No. 6 singles due to forfeit.
Minnesota Crookston will conclude the 2017 season with a pair of matches at Choice Health & Fitness in Grand Forks, N.D. The Golden Eagles will take on Southwest Minnesota State University at 10:30 a.m. April 8. They will then take on Minnesota State University-Mankato April 9 at 8 a.m.
