CROOKSTON, Minn. – The St. Cloud State University pitching staff limited the University of Minnesota Crookston to just one run on four hits as the Huskies picked up the mid-week doubleheader sweep at UMC Baseball Field.
The Huskies looked to Cal Giese and Miles Nablo for a combined three-hit shutout in game one as St. Cloud State picked up the 3-0 win.
In the second game, Dominic Austing had a no-hitter going into the seventh inning and would finish the one-hit victory with no earned runs on one hit with 12 strikeouts in the 4-1 victory.
The Golden Eagles fall to 18-22 (12-16 NSIC) with the pair of losses, despite putting up a strong fight in two great NSIC baseball games. St. Cloud State improved to 29-11 (20-8 NSIC) with the Wednesday sweep. Minnesota Crookston sits in ninth place after the pair of losses. St. Cloud State remains in third place in the conference standings.
Game One
Cody Pamperin (Sr., RHP, Shakopee, Minn.) had a strong outing in the first game. He gave up three runs on three hits in the first inning but would recover and give up no runs on two hits in the final six innings of the game. Pamperin would finish the game with just one earned run on five hits with seven strikeouts.
St. Cloud State opened the scoring in the top of the first when Bo Schmitz singled to right field to drive in Judd Davis. The Huskies would push their lead to 3-9 on a Mathew Meyer double to left center to drive in Schmitz and Jordan Joseph. Pamperin would get out of the inning and would not give up a run the rest of the way.
The Golden Eagles put up their biggest threat of the game in the bottom of the fifth when
Zach Frazier (R-Jr., C, Grand Rapids, Minn.) walked and
Jason Angelo (Jr., 2B, Manteca, Calif.) singled with two outs. However, Giese would pitch his way out of the threat to hold the 3-0 advantage for the Huskies.
The St. Cloud State lefty Giese would get the win after allowing no runs on three hits with four strikeouts and three walks. Miles Nablo earned the save after giving up no runs on no hits in one inning.
Minnesota Crookston looked to two hits from
Reed Hjelle (So., 1B, East Grand Forks, Minn.) to lead the way in the first game.
Game Two
Golden Eagle closer
Zach Seipel (So., RHP, Eagan, Minn.) picked up his first career start as he got the nod in game two. The NSIC's saves leader would go five innings, giving up four runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts and four walks.
Austing would wins the battle on the mound for the Huskies as he gave up no earned runs on one hit with one walk and 12 strikeouts.
St. Cloud State broke the scoreless tie in the top of the third when Meyer reached on a single after three Golden Eagle fielders failed to communicate and let the ball drop in between them in shallow center field. The hit would drive in Schmitz and Davis. Seipel would get out any further danger with a strike out of Jackson Goplen to keep the game at 2-0.
The Huskies added two runs in the top of the fifth. Meyer singled to drive in Mitch Mallek to make it 3-0. In the next at-bat Goplen doubled to center field to plate Meyer.
Minnesota Crookston finally got something going in the bottom of the seventh. Hjelle would reach with one out on an error by Austing after he knocked down a line drive but fumbled with the ball and then had an errant throw to first.
James Cullinane (Jr., OF, San Francisco, Calif.) got on base after being hit by a pitch to give the Golden Eagles two base runners. Minnesota Crookston would get a run to cross as Higgins broke up Austing's no-hitter with a single on a hard-hit line drive to shallow left field. The hit drove in Hjelle to cut the St. Cloud State lead to 4-1.
Minnesota Crookston looked to Higgins, who was 1-of-3 with one RBI.
Jayden Grover (Fr., RHP, Cooperstown, N.D.) had a strong relief outing for Minnesota Crookston. Grover would shut down the Huskies in his two innings with no runs on no hits with no walks and one strikeout.
Justin Yutrzenka (Fr., RHP, Argyle, Minn.) also pitched well in relief, giving up no runs on one hit with three strikeouts in two innings on the bump.
Minnesota Crookston will have a week off from game play before returning to action on the road Wed., April 26 at Northern State University.
