MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Crookston baseball team came back from early deficits to upend Dickinson State University 7-2 and 6-1 at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minn. The games were played during the late hours Sat., March 4 and early hours of Sun., March 5. Minnesota Crookston was led by the starting pitching of
Cody Pamperin (Sr., RHP, Shakopee, Minn.) and
Parker Hanson (So., RHP, Hawley, Minn.), who put the Golden Eagles in prime positions for late comebacks.
The Golden Eagles move to 3-2 with the win, while Dickinson State falls to 3-7 with the losses.
Pamperin would get the ball in game one for Minnesota Crookston. He would put together one of the best starts in his career as he went five innings, giving up just two earned runs on five hits with five strikeouts and no walks. Pamperin would get the win for the Golden Eagles.
Minnesota Crookston would struggle in the early going of the first game of the night.
The Golden Eagles would threaten on several occasions in the first four innings. Minnesota Crookston would get three to reach in the first inning and strand two on the base paths as
James Cullinane (Jr., reached on a bunt single,
Ethan Mushitz walked and
Reed Hjelle singled to right field. However,
Riley Thompson (Jr., OF, Owatonna, Minn.) would line out to get Dickinson State out of any trouble.
UMC would threaten again in the top of the third as speedster
Anthony Stewart (R-Jr., OF, Oak Harbor, Wash.) reached on a leadoff bunt single and Mushitz doubled through the right side. This time, Sean Getchell would come up big on the mound for the Blue Hawks with a pair of strike outs to leave two runners stranded in scoring position for the Golden Eagles.
Minnesota Crookston continued a similar song and dance in the top of the fourth.
Mitchell Bornhauser (Jr., OF, Northfield, Minn.) would hit a rocket to left center and would try to stretch a double into a triple. However, his efforts were thwarted with a strong throw from Micquel Robinson to the cutoff man Dylan Skabo. Skabo would find Sagan Osborne who put down the tag on Bornhauser.
David Anaya (R-Jr., IF, Tucson, Ariz.) would try to keep things going with a walk. Anaya would steal two bags to get to third with two outs. However, Getchell would come through again as he struck out
Jeremy Spinner to get out of trouble.
Dickinson State would take advantage of the missed opportunities for the Golden Eagles to take a lead in the bottom of the fourth. Skabo started things out for the Blue Hawks with a bunt single. The Blue Hawks would get their runs as Trevor Oldham hit a single up the middle to drive home Skabo and Osborne to make it a 2-0 game in favor of Dickinson State.
U of M Crookston would look to have a big inning in the top of the fifth. The Golden Eagles would have bases loaded with just one out with their five-hitter Thompson hit in the batter's box. However, Getchell would come through in a big spot with a strikeout of Thompson to get the second out of the inning. The next at-bat, Getchell's wild pitch would allow Cullinane to score to pull Minnesota Crookston within 2-1. He would get the Blue Hawks out of any danger in the next at-bat as he struck out
Zach Frazier (R-Jr., C, Grand Rapids, Minn.) as Dickinson State would hold on to the lead going into the bottom of the fifth.
Pamperin would come up big on the mound for the Golden Eagles in the bottom of the fifth as he mowed down the Dickinson State order to keep the U of M Crookston down just 2-1.
Minnesota Crookston would back up their starting pitcher's big inning with a big inning at the plate in the top of the sixth as they got to reliever Ryan Absher. Absher would look to be on track to mow down the order as he got the first two batters out on just seven pitchers. However, he ran into control problems from there. He would walk Spinner on four pitches and move Spinner to second on an errant pickoff attempt. Stewart would then come through with a clutch hit as he singled up the middle to plate Spinner.
The Golden Eagles would continue the scoring as Mushitz came through with a double to right field to plate Stewart. They would move their advantage to 5-2 as Hjelle singled to left to plate Mushitz and Cullinane. The Blue Hawks would get out of the inning but not without Minnesota Crookston leading 5-2.
U of M Crookston closer
Zach Seipel (Jr., RHP, Eagan, Minn.) would come on in the top of the seventh. The NSIC's leader in saves last year would run into some trouble as he allowed two base-runners. However, he would pitch out of it to hold the 5-2 lead for the Golden Eagles.
Minnesota Crookston padded their lead with an RBI double from Anaya to drive in Bornhauser and a sacrifice fly from Stewart would bring home Anaya.
Gabriel Cavasos (Jr., RHP, San Antonio, Texas) would get the Blue Hawks out in order as Minnesota Crookston picked up the 7-2 win over Dickinson State.
The Golden Eagles were led by Mushitz, who was 3-of-3 with one RBI and one run scored. Hjelle would go 2-of-3 with two RBI's. Anaya went 2-of-3 with an RBI and a run scored, while Stewart was 2-of-4 with two RBI's and one run scored.
In game two,
Parker Hanson (So., RHP, Hawley, Minn.) would get the start and would have a strong outing on the mound for Minnesota Crookston. Hanson would go 6.2 innings and set up the Golden Eagles for success. He would allow just one run on six hits with five strikeouts.
Nate Albrecht (So., LHP, Wahpeton, N.D.) would pick up the win after getting the only batter he faced out.
Jacob Butcher (R-Jr., RHP, Palmer, Alaska) and
Justin Yutrzenka (Fr., RHP, Argyle, Minn.) both had strong outings in their one inning for Minnesota Crookston. Yutrzenka would strike out two of his four batters faced.
The Golden Eagles would struggle to get anything going through the first six innings as they had just one hit until the seventh inning off of Dickinson State starter Jalen Lane.
The Blue Hawks would hold the 1-0 lead going into the seventh as Trevor Oldham had crossed the plate on a Robinson single.
Minnesota Crookston would get to Lane in the seventh.
Patrick Higgins (Sr., OF, Eagan, Minn.) would start things off with a single. Thompson would come through to give UMC the lead as he singled to left field to drive in pinch-runner Cullinane and Hjelle to make it 2-1.
U of M Crookston would have a huge inning in the eighth as they got to the Blue Hawks pitching. Stewart would single to drive in Frazier to chase relief pitcher Taylor Dantini. Mushitz then continued his big day with a triple to drive in Cullinane and Stewart to chase Gabe Lizzaraga from the mound. Mushitz would later score on a wild pitch as Minnesota Crookston would lead 6-1.
Yutrzenka would preserve the win for Minnesota Crookston as he struck out two of the four batters he faced.
The Golden Eagles were led by Mushitz, who was 1-of-3 with two RBI's and one run scored. Stewart would go 1-of-3 with one RBI and one run scored, while Higgins was 1-of-3 and Thompson was 1-of-4 with two RBI's.
Minnesota Crookston will return to action March 8 against Division I foe South Dakota State University at 7 a.m. at U.S. Bank Stadium.
