DULUTH, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Crookston tennis team fell 9-0 to Gustavus Adolphus College and 8-1 to University of Minnesota Duluth at the Arrowhead Tennis Center in Duluth, Minn. The Golden Eagles fall to 0-5 on the season with the losses.
In the first match of the day, UMC would fall to Gustavus Adolphus. In doubles,
Whitney Erickson (Jr., Spring Valley, Minn.) and
Reanne Erickson (So., Fargo, N.D.) fell 8-0 to Briana Hartmann and Cal Carlson. At No. 2 doubles,
Hanna Ruckheim (Fr., Parkers Prairie, Minn.) and
Adrianna Tiede (Fr., LeCenter, Minn.) were upended 8-0 by Katie Aney and Lilly Hartman. At the No. 3 doubles slot,
Tien Nguyen (So., Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam) and Alyssa Peterson (Fr., Robbinsdale, Minn.) fell 8-0 to Laura Martin and Sheila Sullivan.
In singles,
Whitney Erickson was upended 6-1, 6-0 by Michaela Schulz. At the No. 2 slot, Ally Baker defeated
Reanne Erickson, 6-0, 6-0. At the No. 3 spot, Ruckheim fell 6-0, 6-0 to Taylor Shortly. At the No. 4 slot, Tiede won two points but fell 6-1, 6-1 to Riley Abeyesekera. At No. 5 singles, Peterson won two points but fell 6-1, 6-1 to Lauren Ihle. At the No. 6 slot, Nguyen fell 6-2, 6-1 to Alexandra Thorsen.
"Gustavus has 16 players on their squad and are very deep in talent," said Head Coach
Lee Meier. "We competed well and were in a lot of games. We didn't give up on points and competed hard even when we were down."
Against Minnesota Duluth, UMC fell 8-1. In doubles, the No. 1 pair of
Whitney Erickson and Peterson fell 8-2 to Shelby Benkofske and Kelsey Zetah. At the No. 2 doubles slot, Ruckheim and Tiede fell 8-0 to Karly Weber and Katie Baasch. At the No. 3 spot,
Reanne Erickson and Nguyen were upended 8-0 to Mikayla Gottwalt and Rachel Menke.
At the No. 1 slot, Erickson picked up the forfeit win over Benkofske. At the No. 2 spot, Peterson competed hard but fell 6-2, 6-0 to Megan Anderson. At the No. 3 slot, Ruckheim fell 6-1, 6-0 to Elsa Erickson. At the No. 4 spot, Tiede was upended by Macey Tellijohn, 6-0, 6-1. At the No. 5 slot, Erickson fell 6-1, 6-0 to Menke. At No. 6 singles, Nguyen dropped her match 6-0, 6-0 to Gottwalt.
"UMD has a group of skilled players who were able to finish their points very well," Meier said. "We are doing a great job of competing and we are starting to be able to take some big points."
Golden Eagles wrap up the weekend by playing St. Cloud State University Sat., Feb. 19 at 11 a.m.
