MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The University of Minnesota Crookston women's basketball team fell 71-61 to Barry University Sat., Nov. 25 at the Cesar Odio Thanskgiving Classic in Miami Shores, Fla. The Golden Eagles continued to struggle beyond the arc as they shot just 25.0 percent from distance. In addition, Minnesota Crookston was controlled on the glass 47-32.
The Golden Eagles sit at 0-4 after the loss to Barry Saturday. Minnesota Crookston finishes 0-2 at the Cesar Odio Thanksgiving Classic on the Barry University campus at the Health & Sports Center. Barry improved to 4-2 with Saturday's victory.
Minnesota Crookston looked to 17 points and seven boards from
Emily Gruber (Jr., F/C, Monticello, Minn.), who shot 8-of-13 from the field.
Isieoma Odor (R-Jr., F/C, Bloomington, Minn.) finished with a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Caitlin Michaelis (Jr., G, Marshfield, Wis.) notched 13 points, including going 3-of-5 from beyond the arc.
Micaela Noga (Sr., G, Parkers Prairie, Minn.) added 11 points and six assists.
The Golden Eagles continue to struggle with getting help off of their bench as they produced just seven bench points led by four points and four rebounds from Ashley Freund (Fr., G/F, Jordan, Minn.).
Minnesota Crookston shot 23-of-57 for 40.4 percent from the field. They were 6-of-24 from beyond the arc and 9-of-12 for 75.0 percent from the charity stripe.
The Golden Eagles lost the rebounding edge 47-32, giving up 15 offensive boards. Barry shot 25-of-67 for 37.3 percent. Their three-point shooting led the way as they were successful on 12-of-29 attempts for 41.9 percent. The Buccaneers shot 9-of-13 for 69.2 percent from the foul line.
Barry looked to 26 points from Barbara Cousino, who was 8-of-12 from the field and 6-of-9 from behind the three-point line. Ida Andersson chipped in 11 points and seven boards. Kiara Palmer finished with eight points and 13 boards, while Lexy Schoonover added nine points. Juhnae Richardson came off the bench for nine points.
The Golden Eagles opened the game on an 8-3 run guided by four points from Odor. The Buccaneers pulled within one point as Cousino connected on a trey with 6:55 left in the first quarter to make it 10-9. Schoonover and Andersson followed suit with buckets to tilt the score in favor of Barry 13-10. Minnesota Crookston countered with a 7-0 run led by five points from Odor as they took the lead back 17-13. The Buccaneers closed the first stanza on a 7-2 stamped by a Harriet Swindells three-pointer to close out the quarter with a 20-19 lead for Barry.
The Golden Eagles scored the first eight points of the second quarter to move the advantage back in their favor 27-20. Michaelis ignited the run with a triple. Barry followed with a 14-0 run paced by seven points from Cousino. The Buccaneers went into the half with a 36-29 as the late run gave Barry all of the momentum going into the locker room.
Minnesota Crookston came out of the locker room poised to make up ground as they used a 10-4 run to knot the game up 39-39 on a Michaelis three-pointer. Barry responded with an 8-0 run to take the lead 47-39 ignited by triples from Swindells and Andersson. Minnesota Crookston pulled back within 49-46 late in the third quarter after a pair of free throws from
Lindsey Weber (Jr., G/F, Delafield, Wis.). The Buccaneers closed out the quarter with a Palmer bucket to make it 51-46.
Barry opened the fourth quarter on an 8-0 run to extend their advantage to 59-46. Barry would lead by as many as 15 points in the fourth quarter as the Golden Eagles could not come back, falling 71-61 to the tournament host.
Minnesota Crookston will open up conference play Fri., Dec. 1 at 6 p.m. against St. Cloud State University.
