Golden Eagles Succumb 2-1 to Northern State Despite Late Lead

CROOKSTON, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Crookston women's soccer team gave up two second-half goals as they fell 2-1 to Northern State University Sun., Oct. 8 at UMC Soccer Field. The Golden Eagles went into the break up 1-0 and led for over 30 minutes before giving up two goals in the final 18 minutes of the contest.

Minnesota Crookston had a strong showing on the day, but just couldn't stop Northern State's late chances as they fell to 0-10-1 (0-8-1 NSIC) with Sunday's loss. The Golden Eagles showed a lot of signs of improvement on the weekend as they earned a draw Friday with Minnesota State University Moorhead and led for a majority of Sunday's game versus Northern State. Northern State improved to 4-6-1 (3-5-1 NSIC) with the victory.

Minnesota Crookston was led by Madison Korus (Sr., D, Lexington, Minn.), who tallied the first goal of her career in the Maroon and Gold. Maggie Gibbons (Sr., D, Cohasset, Minn.) notched an assist for the day. Vanessa Shelton (Fr., MF, Tacoma, Wash.) notched three shots on goal to pace the Golden Eagles.

The Golden Eagles tallied eight shots on the day with four shots on goal.

Northern State notched 21 shots with nine shots on goal during Sunday's game. Minnesota Crookston goalie Olivia Puttin (So., GK, Rogers, Minn.) put up a clean sheet for the first 72 minutes before giving up the equalizer and the game-winning goal. Puttin gave up the two goals and notched seven saves in 90 minutes in net.

The Wolves had goals from Tori Collesso and Karli Harney. Stephany Estrada tallied the only assist of the game for Northern State. Emily Reiten led the team with two shots on goal. Shianne Rosselli had five shots overall on the game.

Justine Charles got the win in net for Northern State after giving up one goal and notching three saves on the contest.

Both teams kept their goalies from being tested early on in the game as neither team notched a shot on goal for the first 40 minutes. The first shot on goal on the game was finished as Gibbons got a free kick off of a penalty. Gibbons played the kick from the left side from about 20 yards out into the box where Korus won a scramble for the ball and put it into the back of the net to put Minnesota Crookston up 1-0.

Minnesota Crookston got the first legitimate chance of the second half with a shot on goal from Shelton in the 48th minute. Shelton had another shot on net in the 52nd minute.

Northern State finally got their first shot on net as Tori Thorpe put a shot on goal that was put away by Puttin in the 57th minute.

The Wolves had a flurry of chance in front of the net around the 60 minute mark but the Minnesota Crookston defense prevented Puttin from being tested.

Shelton notched her third shot on goal of the second half in the 68th minute but Charles came away with the save for the Wolves.

Northern State finally got on the board as Collesso played a shot from distance on the left side into the upper right corner of the net, knotting up the game 1-1. Collesso made her own shot as she dribbled up the left side and created space for the shot.

The Wolves again had a flurry of chances after the 76th minute before they put away a chance on a goal from Harney on an assist from Estrada in the 81st minute.

The Golden Eagles would be unable to generate any opportunities on the offensive end as Northern State would hang on for the 2-1 win.
