MOORHEAD, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Crookston women's soccer team picked up their first result of the season with a draw against Minnesota State University Moorhead Fri., Oct. 6 in Moorhead, Minn.
The Golden Eagles looked to the play of Olivia Puttin (So., GK, Rogers, Minn.), who picked up her first shutout of the season. Puttin turned away six shots on the day for the Golden Eagles and did not give up a goal.
Minnesota Crookston moved their mark to 0-9-1 (0-7-1) with Friday's draw against MSU Moorhead. The two teams share the Highway 75 rivalry rock, a trophy made to commemorate the 70 miles that separate Crookston and Moorhead on Highway 75.
The Golden Eagles first chance in the game came in the 14th minute when Maggie Peterson (Fr., F, Princeton, Minn.) put a shot on net that was saved by Corina Edgington.
The U of M Crookston again looked to find the net in the 25th minute with a shot from Corbin that was turned away by Edgington.
Minnesota Crookston looked to strike in the 41st minute soon after generating a corner kick for Maggie Gibbons (Sr., D, Cohasset, Minn.). This time Lindsey Daml (So., D/MF, North Pole, Alaska) put the shot on frame, which was put away by Edgington.
The Golden Eagles had a flurry of chances at the end of the half as Jessica Withrow's (Fr., MF/F, Gardnerville, Nev.) shot was blocked and Daml's shot was put away by Edgington.
The Dragons did not have a shot on goal in the first half.
MSU Moorhead came out of the break with a push for the first goal, but Jenai DeNardo's chance was saved by Puttin.
The Dragons generated another opportunity in the 60th minute off of a Jessica Dallman corner kick. DeNardo put another shot on net, which was turned away by Puttin.
Minnesota Crookston got their first chance of the second half in the 65th minute with a shot on net by Nikki Dogan (Sr., MF, Grand Forks, N.D.). The shot was saved by Edgington.
The Dragons countered in the 71st minute with a try from Maren Soupir that bounced off the Golden Eagle crossbar.
Dogan had another chance in the half in the 76th minute with Edgington again coming away with the stop.
MSU Moorhead generated more chances later in the frame as Dallman had a shot put away by Puttin, followed by a Lindsey Brownell ball that ricocheted off the post.
Neither team would finish their chances in the scheduled 90 minutes, sending the game into overtime.
The Dragons had the first opportunity in the 91st minute on a shot from Dallman that was put away by Puttin. Kylee Billings had the only other shot on goal in the first overtime period, as Puttin came up again with the save for the Golden Eagles.
The only shot on net in the second overtime came from Soupir, but Puttin again came away with the stop as she pitched the clean sheet keeping the game at a 0-0 draw after 110 minutes.
Minnesota Crookston was led on the attack by two shots on goal from Dogan and Daml. Peterson and Nicole Corbin (Sr., D, Ramsey, Minn.) also had shots on net as the Golden Eagles tallied six shots on goal for the game. Minnesota Crookston notched nine shots overall on the game.
MSU Moorhead was paced by two shots on goal from Dallman and DeNardo. The Dragons notched six shots on goal and 16 shots overall.
Edgington also picked up the clean sheet as she did not give up a goal and notched six saves in 110 minutes.
Minnesota Crookston will return to play Sun., Oct. 8 at 1 p.m. against Northern State University at the UMC Soccer Field in Crookston, Minn.
