Box Score BEMIDJI, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Crookston volleyball team picked up their first NSIC (Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference) win as they swept Bemidji State University 3-0 (25-20, 28-26) Tues., Sept. 20 at BSU Gymnasium. The Golden Eagles turned the tides on the Beavers and swept them after being swept 3-0 by Bemidji State in Sioux Falls, S.D. Sept. 9.
Minnesota Crookston improves to 5-6 (1-2 NSIC) with the win. Bemidji State falls to 5-6 (1-2 NSIC) with the loss. The match was the second of three contests against BSU.
Minnesota Crookston was led by one of the best performances in the career of
Maggie Perrel (R-Jr., OH, New Germany, Minn.). She notched 20 kills with just five errors and hit .357 for the match from her outside hitter position. Perrel averaged 6.7 kills per set on the match.
UMC was aided by
Kali Erickson (Sr., OH, Fargo, N.D.), who added seven kills and hit .235, while
Callie Schapekahm (So., MH, Eagan, Minn.) notched six kills and hit .417 for the match.
Sierra Trost (Sr., S, Ham Lake, Minn.) had control of the reins of the UMC offense and led them to a .302 hitting percentage with 47 kills and just 15 errors in three sets. Trost finished with 41 assists for an average of 13.7 assists per set.
Defensively, UMC was paced by 14 digs from
Ali Schueler (R-Fr., DS/Lib., Howards Grove, Wis.). Perrel added 11 digs.
Bemidji State was led by Amanda Tronick's 12 kills and .226 hitting percentage. Jessica Yost added nine kills. Heather Fletcher chipped in eight kills and hit .429 for the match.
Shelby Haney led the offense with 34 assists. Defensively, BSU was led by Kelli Auer's 11 digs, while Ashley Abear added seven digs.
After two sets, the Golden Eagles were led by a great performance from Perrel with 14 kills and a .312 hitting percentage.
Kelci Green (R-Jr., MH, Anoka, Minn.) added six kills and hit .400, while Erickson and
Kassi Green (R-Jr., OH, Anoka, Minn.) each added five kills.
The Golden Eagles hit .308 in the first two sets as they had 36 kills with just 12 errors on 78 total attacks.
Sierra Trost controlled a strong offensive performance in the first two sets with 34 assists.
Defensively, UMC was led in the first two frames by 10 digs from Schueler, while Perrel added seven.
Bemidji State hit .342 in the first two frames with 30 kills and five errors. The Beavers were paced by nine kills and a .400 hitting percentage from Tronick. Yost and Fletcher each added seven kills.
At setter, BSU was led by Haney. Defensively, the Beavers looked to Auer's eight digs, while Yost chipped in seven digs.
Minnesota Crookston would take the first set 25-20 following a kill from
Kelci Green.
UMC would go up 24-20 in the second set but Bemidji State would make a late charge. The Beavers would be able to knot up the set 24-24 after a Fletcher kill. The two teams would go back-and-forth until UMC would be able to take the set 28-26 following a Perrel kill.
The Golden Eagles would take the momentum of the second set and ride it into the third set. The Golden Eagles would get out to a 7-1 lead and would turn it into a 25-13 set victory to take the match 3-0.
Minnesota Crookston will return to action Fri., Sept. 23 as they take on No. 1 Concordia University- St. Paul at 6 p.m. at Lysaker Gymnasium in Crookston, Minn.
