OWATONNA, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Crookston tennis program concluded the season on Sun., April 10 as they fell 9-0 to Minnesota State University-Mankato and 7-2 to Southwest Minnesota State University. The Golden Eagles end the 2016 season with a 0-15 mark on the year.
In the first match of Sunday, UMC took on the Mavericks in St. Peter, Minn. The Golden Eagles would fall 9-0 on the day.
In doubles, the pair of
Catherine Brown (Sr., Powell Butte, Ore.) and
Whitney Erickson (So., Spring Valley, Minn.) fell 8-3 to Melissa Mashburn and Erin Streeter. At the No. 2 slot,
Bailey Morris (Fr., Crookston, Minn.) and
Nikki Dogan (So., Grand Forks, N.D.) were upended by Killian Doran and Sarah McCann, 8-0. At the No. 3 spot,
Reanne Erickson (Fr., Fargo, N.D.) and
Emily Campbell (Jr., Aitkin, Minn.) fell 8-0 to Lisa Dobbelaere and Abby Schmidt.
In singles, Brown took the first set at No. 1, 6-1, but fell 6-4, 10-2 to Mashburn in the next two to drop the match. At No. 2 singles, Streeter defeated
Whitney Erickson, 6-0, 6-0. At the No. 3 slot, Doran upended Morris, 6-0, 6-0. At No. 4 singles,
Reanne Erickson fell to McCann, 6-1, 6-0. At the No. 5 spot, Dogan fell 6-0, 6-0 to Dobbelaere. At No. 6 singles, Campbell was defeated by Katie Salinda, 6-0, 6-0.
In the second match of the day, UMC would put up a battle at most spots but would fall 7-2 to Southwest Minnesota State University in Owatonna, Minn. The Golden Eagles were led by Brown, who finished up her UMC career with a win. Brown defeated Gabby Tellijohn, 7-6, 2-6, 10-4. Brown wraps up her best season in singles as she went 7-8 on the year at the No. 1 singles slot.
In doubles, Brown and
Whitney Erickson fought until the bitter end, but fell to Tellijohn and Crystal Overbaugh, 8-7, at No. 1. At the No. 2 spot, Morris and Dogan were defeated by Ashley Hoehne and Britney Thompson, 8-3. At No. 3,
Reanne Erickson and Campbell fell to Mariya Krumm and Mady Brinkman, 8-0.
Whitney Erickson got her third singles win of the season at the No. 2 slot, upending Overbaugh, 6-0, 6-0.
At No. 3, Morris went to three sets with Hoehne, but fell 6-7, 6-2, 6-10. At the No. 4 slot,
Reanne Erickson was defeated by Thompson, 6-1, 6-0. At No. 5 singles, Dogan fell to Krumm, 6-0, 6-0. At the No. 6 slot, Campbell lost to Jenna Gannot, 6-1, 6-0.
The 2016 season was the second under
Ryan McGuigan, as he looks to continue to build up the program. The Golden Eagles graduate just Brown from the team as they look to build on their core for the future.
