BEMIDJI, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Crookston tennis team fell 7-2 to Bemidji State University Sat., Feb. 6 at the Gillett Recreation and Fitness Center in Bemidji, Minn. The Golden Eagles were led by a strong performance from
Catherine Brown (Sr., Powell Butte, Ore./Animal Science), who picked up wins at No. 1 singles and doubles against the Beavers.
The Golden Eagles fall to 0-1 on the 2016 season, their second under Head Coach
Ryan McGuigan, while Bemidji State improved to 1-0 with the win and moved to 2-0 with a win over University of Minnesota Duluth.
At No. 1 doubles, Brown and
Whitney Erickson (So., Spring Valley, Minn.) took down Shaylin Prout and Deanie Hatch 8-6. At No. 2 doubles,
Bailey Morris (Fr., Crookston, Minn.) and
Nikki Dogan (So., Grand Forks, N.D.) fell 8-1 to Morgan Opp and Zoe Lindgren. At the No. 3 slot,
Reanne Erickson (Fr., Fargo, N.D.) and
Tien Nguyen (Fr., Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam) fell 8-0 to Hope Johnson and Breann Walsh.
In singles, Brown battled back to defeat Prout, 6-7, 7-5, 10-5 to start the year at 1-0 in singles. At No. 2 singles,
Whitney Erickson fell 6-3, 7-5 to Hatch. At the No. 3 slot, Morris dropped her match to Lindgen, 6-0, 6-0. At the No. 4 spot, BSU's Justine Scheller defeated Dogan, 6-1, 6-0. At No. 5 singles, BSU's Claudia Bellew upended
Reanne Erickson, 6-0, 6-1, while at No. 6 Nguyen fell 6-0, 6-0 to Sabrina Okeson.
UMC's match Sunday against Concordia University Moorhead was postponed due to weather. They will take on Upper Iowa University and Winona State University at Choice Health and Fitness in Grand Forks, N.D. Feb. 12 and 13.
