Minnesota Crookston Falls 87-60 to MSU Moorhead

CROOKSTON, Minn. - The University of Minnesota Crookston women's basketball team  lost their home opener to Minnesota State University Moorhead Fri., Dec. 9, 87-60. The Golden Eagles shot just 34 percent from the field and 41 percent from beyond the arc. The Golden Eagles went 7-of-12 from the line. Minnesota Crookston had 16 turnovers leading to 19 points for MSU Moorhead. The Dragons would shoot 57 percent from the field and 55 percent from beyond the arc. The Dragons went near perfect from the line going 11-of-13.

The Golden Eagles are still looking for their first win as they fall to 0-7. MSU Moorhead moves to 7-1 with the win.

The Golden Eagles were led by 15 points from Alison Hughes (So., G, Janesville, Wis.) on 4-of-11 from the field and 3-of-8 from beyond the arc. Isieoma Odor (R-So., F/C, Bloomington, Minn.) added 13 points and nine rebounds. Kelsey Stinson (Fr., G/F, Cottage Grove, Wis.) would add 12 points, including going 4-of-9 from beyond the arc.

MSU Moorhead looked to 21 points on 6-of-8 from the field from Cassidy Thorson. Jacky Volkert added 13 points, five rebounds and four assists. Drew Sannes chipped in nine points and seven rebounds. Madi Green chipped in nine points.

MSU Moorhead took an early 8-0 lead with the help of Volkert, who scored the first four points for the Dragons. The Golden Eagles could not find their touch early on, missing their first five shots, before Odor opened up the scoring with a jumper. The Dragons followed with a 10-0 run. After a short technical difficulty due to the scoreboard losing power, Noga made a jumper to bring the score to 18-5. Stinson made the first three of the night for the Golden Eagles with six seconds left in the first. The Dragons held the Golden Eagles to just eight points in the first quarter, taking a 25-8 lead into the second.

UMC forced two turnovers early in the second quarter. Hughes went one-for-two on her free throws to cut the Dragons' lead to 25-9. Sannes shot a long jumper for the Dragons which was quickly followed by a layup from Emily Gruber (Jr., F, Monticello, Minn.). Moorhead picked up the next seven points with the help of Cassidy Thorson's three, Natalie Van Wyhe's jumper and a layup by Volkert. Odor picked up a layup to bring the score to 34-13. The Dragons took a 20-point lead into the half leading 44-24.

Morgan Ham made a quick layup off of a turnover to start the third quarter. The Golden Eagles responded with a 9-0 run in which Hughes picked up two three-pointers and a free throw. Odor also had a layup. Sannes stopped the run with a layup bringing the score to 48-33. After the media timeout, Caitlin Michaels made her first bucket of the night for three points. Thorson made four-straight free throws extending the Dragon lead to 54-36. Shannon Galegher and Hughes picked up threes for their respective teams. Thorson then went on to make two more free throws making her 6-of-6 from the line. Noga used an assist from Amber Schoenicke (Fr., F/C, Marshall, Wis.) to pick up her second three-pointer.  Green would make a free throw and a jumper to bring the score to 61-41 with just a little over a minute left in the third quarter. Dierra Diegel then extended MSUM's lead to 62-41 with a free throw.

Diegel took advantage of Crookston's 12th turnover, making a three to start the fourth quarter. After Kitri Zezza's (Fr., G, Albertville, Minn.) layup for UMC, Van Wyhe picked up a three and Kourtney Selensky picked up a jumper. Gruber went 1-of-2 at the line to make the score 72-46.  Volkert and Galagher knocked down back to back jumpers to extend MSU Moorhead's lead to 79-48. In the last three minutes, Megan Hintz picked up two layups and Selensky and Green each knocked down jumpers for the Dragons. Hughes, Weber, and Stinson all knocked down threes. To bring the final score to 87-60.

Minnesota Crookston will return to play Dec. 10 at 4 p.m. against Northern State University.
