Second Quarter Run Guides No. 15 Angelo State Past Minnesota Crookston 86-67

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – A 24-8 run in the second quarter was the difference as No. 15 Angelo State University defeated the University of Minnesota Crookston women's basketball team Fri., Nov. 25 at Bill Greehey Arena. The game was the first for UMC at the St. Mary's Thanksgiving Classic in San Antonio, Texas.

Minnesota Crookston starts the season with a 0-3 mark as the Golden Eagles have had a tough schedule to open the season. Angelo State moves to 2-0 with Friday's win.
Minnesota Crookston would hang with the Belles for all but one quarter of Friday's game as they even outscored Angelo State 22-21 in the third quarter.

The Golden Eagles would look to their two most reliable players to start the season. Alison Hughes (So., G, Janesville, Wis.) continued her strong start to the season as she finished with 19 points on 6-of-13 from the field and 3-of-7 from beyond the arc. The point guard is averaging 19.7 points per game through three contests this season. Isieoma Odor (R-So., F/C, Bloomington, Minn.) would add 16 points and eight rebounds. She was 7-of-11 from the field.

Caitlin Michaelis (So., G, Marshfield, Wis.) would chip in seven points. Paige Weakley (So., G, Kearney, Mo.) added six points off the bench, while Kelsey Stinson (Fr., G/F, Cottage Grove, Wis.) had five.

Minnesota Crookston was 23-of-60 from the field for 38.3 percent from the field. The Golden Eagles shot 7-of-24 from beyond the arc for 29.2 percent.

They also struggled to hold on to the ball as they had 11 assists to 16 turnovers on the game.

Angelo State looked to their star player Taylor Dorsey, who would finish with 30 points on 12-of-15 from the field. The Belles are coming off making it to the second round of the NCAA Tournament where they would lose to eventual National Champion Lubbock Christian University.

Jasmine Prophet added 15 points and seven boards in the post, while Lexi Murphy came off the bench for 13 points and seven boards.

Angelo State was 24-of-65 for 52.3 percent from the field and 3-of-7 for 42.9 percent from beyond the arc.

The Belles would get out to a 16-8 lead with 3:59 left in the first quarter following a three-pointer from Doresey. However, UMC would finish strong as they would close to within 24-20 going into the second quarter after Hughes hit a pair of free throws. UMC would outscore Angelo State 12-8 in the final 3:59 of the first quarter.

The Golden Eagles would struggle out of the gate in the second quarter as the Belles outscored them 9-2 to go up 33-22 after an old-fashioned three-point play from Dorsey. UMC would get four-consecutive points to cut it to 33-26 after a Stinson fast break lay-up. However it would be all Angelo State the rest of the second quarter as they would control UMC 15-2 the remainder of the period to make it 48-28 going into the half.

The Golden Eagles would have a strong second half as they outscored the No. 15 team in the nation 39-38. However, it would be too little, too late as the second quarter was enough for the Belles to take down UMC. Minnesota Crookston would look to Odor in the second half as she had 13 points, while Hughes added seven. Weakley would score six points in the second half.
Minnesota Crookston will return to action Sat., Nov. 26 at 4 p.m. against Saint Mary's University (Texas) in their second game of the Saint Mary's Thanksgiving Classic.
