17-2 Run Out of the Gate Leads Michigan Tech to 74-53 Win over Minnesota Crookston


HOUGHTON, Mich. – The University of Minnesota Crookston women's basketball team opened the season with a 74-53 loss to Michigan Tech University at SDC Gym in Houghton, Mich. The Golden Eagles would fall behind early as they were out-scored by the Huskies 26-8 in the first quarter.

Minnesota Crookston falls to 0-1 to open the 2016-17 season. Michigan Tech moves to 2-0 on the season. The Golden Eagles have lost to the Huskies in back-to-back seasons as they fell 85-62 to then-No. 8 Michigan Tech in 2015.

Minnesota Crookston had strong performances from Alison Hughes (So., G, Janesville, Wis.) and Isieoma Odor (R-So., F/C, Bloomington, Minn.). Hughes was 7-of-12 from the field, 4-of-6 from beyond the arc and 6-of-6 from the charity stripe. Hughes had 24 points and five rebounds. Odor tallied 11 points and eight rebounds.

The Golden Eagles would get only 18 points from players not named Hughes and Odor. Micaela Noga (Jr., G, Parkers Prairie, Minn.) had seven points on 3-of-11 from the field. Kitri Zezza (Fr., G, Albertville, Minn.) came off the bench for six points.

Minnesota Crookston was 16-of-56 from the field for 28.6 percent from the field and 5-of-14 for 35.7 percent from beyond the arc. They had a strong showing from the charity stripe going 16-of-20 for 80 percent.

Minnesota Crookston would finish the game with 15 turnovers to just five assists.

Michigan Tech had four players score in double figures. Morgan Anderson would lead the way with 15 points, while Elizabeth Kelliher also had 15 points. Kelli Guy would have 13 points on 5-of-12 from the field and 3-of-7 from beyond the arc. Brenna Heise would add 11 points. Hannah Stoll came off the bench for five points and 11 rebounds.

The Huskies were 31-of-67 for 46.3 percent from the field and 5-of-17 for 29.4 percent from beyond the arc. Michigan Tech had 12 assists to 10 turnovers.

Michigan Tech would start out the game on a 26-8 lead going into the second quarter and they wouldn't look back. UMC would only be out-scored 48-45 in the final three quarters of the game. The first quarter run would be led by a 17-2 run to open the game led by 10 points from Anderson.

The Golden Eagles will return to action Sat., Nov. 19 as they take on Northern Michigan University at 12:30 p.m. in Marquette,  Mich.
