CROOKSTON, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Crookston soccer team fell 4-0 to Minnesota State University-Mankato Sun., Oct. 2 on Senior Day at UMC Soccer Field. The Mavericks out-shot the Golden Eagles 16-5 on the day.
Minnesota Crookston falls to 2-7-1 (1-5-1) with the loss. The Golden Eagles are currently in a three-way tie in 13
th place with University of Mary and Winona State University. Minnesota State is currently in fifth place in the conference standings.
Minnesota State was led by the play of Kiana Nickel, who finished with goals and one assist, while Taylor Kenealy added a goal and an assist.
UMC was led by shots on goal from
Abi Aswege (Fr., F, West Bend, Wis.),
Taylor Peterson (Sr., MF, Bismarck, N.D.),
Lorna McCall (So., F, Chicago, Ill.) and
Lindsey Daml (Fr., MF, North Pole, Alaska).
The key to the game for Minnesota State was their job on their service into the box, which was top notch on the day for the Mavericks.
The Mavericks got on the board seven minutes into the game as Abby Huisken played a beautiful ball from the left side from about 30 yards back, finding Nickel, who flicked the ball past
Lexie Gauger (Sr., GK, Green Bay, Wis.) in net.
In the 14
th minute, Minnesota State would go up 2-0 as Nickel played a good diagonal ball from the left side from about 35 yards out, finding Kenealy, who headed it in.
The Mavericks would strike again in the 37
th minute when Kenealy played a cross from the right, which would be finished by Morgan Cottew.
In the second half, Minnesota State would play a good ball from the right side, finding a player in the box, but UMC would be called for the foul, giving the Mavericks a penalty kick. Nickel would beat Gauger to the right, scoring her second goal of the contest, to make it 4-0.
The Golden Eagles have a big weekend in their quest to move up the standings next weekend as they host Minnesota State University Moorhead Fri., Oct. 7 at 3 p.m. and Northern State University Oct. 9 at 1 p.m. in Aberdeen, S.D. MS Moorhead is currently a point below UMC in the standings, while Northern State is two points ahead.
Sunday served as Senior Day for UMC as they honored Gauger,
Molly Buck (Sr., D, Lakeville, Minn.),
Danielle Gau (Sr., D, Monticello, Minn.),
Kallie Gau (Sr., F, Monticello, Minn.), Peterson and
Samantha Deutsch (Sr., D, Lakeville, Minn.). The six players were part of Head Coach
Joe Alianiello's first recruiting class. They have led the Golden Eagles to their most wins in program history by a four-year class, which currently sits at 18.
