Nelson Tosses Strong Game But UMC Falls 4-3 and 11-1 to Northern State

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ABERDEEN, S.D.  The University of Minnesota Crookston put together a strong outing in game one Sat., April 25 against Northern State University with Jarad Nelson (Jr., RHP, Karlstad, Minn./Education) putting UMC in a position to win. However, two late runs in the fifth and sixth inning would catapult Northern State past Minnesota Crookston 4-3. In game two, it was all Northern State in the 11-1 win.

The Golden Eagles fall to 11-35 on the season, while Northern State improves to 21-19. UMC has been close in several games this season, losing 10 games by just one run. The Golden Eagles have accomplished major goals this season, reaching their all-time win total of 11. They need just two wins to tie their conference win mark.

Nelson put together a very strong outing for the Golden Eagles, giving up just four earned runs on 10 hits in six innings with four strikeouts. Nelson has put together two back-to-back great outings for the Maroon and Gold. The Northwest Minnesota Native has appeared in 14 innings with a 1-1 mark and five earned runs with nine strikeouts. Nelson has posted a 3.21 ERA.

The Golden Eagles got the scoring going in the first when Colton Haight (Jr., OF, Rogers, Minn./Sports and Rec Management) singled to drive in Ryan Haggstrom (Jr., 1B/RHP, Apple Valey, Minn./Accounting).

Northern State would respond as Lucas Lorez hit a solo home run off Nelson to tie it up 1-1.

The Wolves would go ahead 2-1 in the third as Mark Abrahmson douled to left to drive Tyler Gripentrog.

Down 2-1, UMC would come through in the fifth. Haggstrom would come through with a clth triple and Kenny Perez (Jr., DH/IF, Orlando, Fla./Health Science) would drive him home to put the Golden Eagles up 3-2.

In the fifth, Northern State would get one back as Alex Cornewll hit a sacrifice fly to score Jack Schmidt

The Wolves would add what would prove to be the game-winning run in the sixth as Lorenz doubled in Erin O'Bryan to make it 4-3.

Marcua Manderbach would get the win out of the bullpen, going 1.1 innings and giving up no runs and no hits.

UMC was led in game one by Perez, who was 3-of-4 with one RBI, while Haight was 2-of-3 with one RBI.


Game two would be all Northern State from the get-go in an 11-1 win. The Wolves were led a three RBI home run in the seventh from Cornwell. In addition Gripentrog hit a solo shot and Schmidt hit an RBI triple to drive in Abrahamson.

UMC was led by one run from Haggstrom as he singled in Dalton Parks (Jr,., OF, West Valley City, Utah/Sports and Rec Management).

The win for Northern State went to Cody Johns, who went seven innings and ave up one earned run on
seven hits.

The game was the roughest for the normally reliable Nolan Wahlberg (Jr., RHP, Blaine, Minn./Criminal Justice). Wahlberg would go 4.1 innings and give up eight earned runs on 13 hits.

The Golden Eagles will continue their play against Northern State Sun., April 25 at 1 and 3 p.,.
