Box Score 2 CROOKSTON, Minn.- The University of Minnesota Crookston picked up a split Friday night against University of Mary in a doubleheader at Jim Karn Field in Crookston. The Golden Eagles fell 5-3 in game one but bounced back for a 5-2 win led by strong pitching by
Jarad Nelson (Jr., RHP, Karlstad, Minn./Education) and
Nolan Wahlberg (Jr., RHP, Blaine, Minn./Criminal Justice). The win marks the 10th of the season for UMC as the Golden Eagles move to 10-30 (4-20 NSIC). The 10 wins ties the mark set by the 2012 team for wins in a season. U-Mary falls to 4-32 (2-20 NSIC) with the Friday split.
Nelson picked up his third win of the season Friday as he put together one of his strongest outings in the Maroon and Gold. The Northwest Minnesota product went eight innings and 105 pitches, allowing two runs, one of them earned, on four hits with five strikeouts. Wahlberg would be called upon in the ninth to shut down the Marauders and he did just that, limiting the Marauders to one hit as he picked up his first save of the 2015 season.
The Marauders got on board in the first of game two when Sean Hennen hit a sacrifice fly to center to drive in Seth Meide to make it 1-0. The Golden Eagles would strike in the bottom half when
Dalton Parks (Jr., OF, West Valley City, Utah/Sports and Rec Management) came across on a
Ryan Haggstrom (Jr., 1B/RHP, Apple Valley, Minn./Accounting) groundout.
UMC would take the lead 2-1 in the second when
Patrick Higgins (So., OF, Eagan, Minn./Criminal Justice) fouled out and
Thomas Kinsella (Jr., IF, North Branch, Minn./Sports and Rec Management) came across for the run.
U-Mary would knot up the game 2-2 in the top of the third as Tom Imholte scored on an error by the Golden Eagles.
The Golden Eagles would go ahead 3-2 in the bottom half as
Colton Haight (Jr., C/OF, Rogers, Minn./Sports and Rec Management) would come through with what would prove to be the game-winning run batted in (RBI) as he drove in Haggstrom to make it 3-2.
Jake Johnson combined with Zach Steckler and Nelson would engage in an old-fashioned pitchers' duel from there as only two hits were allowed until the bottom of the eighth.
The Marauders would threaten in the top of the eighth with runner in scoring position. Nelson would strike out Hennen and have to throw down to first on a wild pitch. Seth Meide would attempt to score on the play but Haggstrom would throw home where Nelson put on the tag and retired Meide to maintain the 3-2 lead heading into the bottom of the eighth.
Nelson's teammates would come through in the bottom of the eighth as the Golden Eagles would add two runs. With
Jesse Jennings (Sr., OF, Robbinsdale, Minn./Criminal Justice) up to bat, the Marauders would put the shift on putting five players in the infield, including the left fielder. However Steckler's first pitch would go under the catcher as Haight scored on a passed ball. Jennings would then come through with a single to drive home Kinsella to extend the lead to 5-2.
Wahlberg would come on and give up a walk and a single, but strike out pinch-hitter Will Pettener to preserve the 5-2 win for the Golden Eagles.
UMC was led on game two by Haight, who was 3-of-4 with one RBI and one run scored. Kinsella would go 2-of-4 with two runs scored.
Luke Thoma (Jr., RHP, Little Falls, Minn./Natural Resources) would get the game one start and go five innings and give up five runs, four of them earned, on seven hits.
UMC would start out game one in a big way as
Ethan Mushitz (Fr., 2B/SS, East Grand Forks, Minn./Criminal Justice) hit a one-run shot to right field to put the Golden Eagles up 1-0.
The Golden Eagles would add a run in the second as Haight scored on a Higgins groundout.
U-Mary would add four runs in the fourth. Mason Schiff would double to drive in Drew Feuerbach and Clay Bagginthwaithe. A Tom Imholte single would drive in Cory Dixon. The Marauders would add one more in the fourth as Schiff scored on an error.
The Golden Eagles would cut the lead to 4-2 as Kinsella singled to right field to drive in Higgins.
U-Mary would add a security run in the sixth as Trenten Hove singled to drive in Dixon.
McKeon Meyhoff would get the win for U-Mary, going seven innings and allowing three runs, two of them earned, on seven hits.
UMC was led by Kinsella in game one, who was 2-of-4 with one RBI.
The Golden Eagles will host U-Mary at 1 and 3 p.m. Sat., April 18 at UMC Baseball Field. The games will mark senior day for the Golden Eagles as the team honors Jennings,
Alan Frank (Sr., LHP, St. Michael, Minn./Applied Studies),
Richie Navratil (Sr., RHP, Blansko, Czech Republic/Management) and
Travis Magdzas (Sr., DH, Duluth, Minn./Criminal Justice).
