Box Score 2 FAYETTE, Iowa- The University of Minnesota Crookston baseball team picked up a split against Upper Iowa University Saturday afternoon at Robertson Woods Field in Fayette, Iowa. The Golden Eagles fell 15-8 in game one but bounced back in game two for a 5-4 victory over the Peacocks.
Dalton Parks scored on an error in the top of the ninth to help the Golden Eagles to their first conference win of 2015. The Golden Eagles improve to 7-14 (1-5 NSIC). UMC last defeated Upper Iowa during the 2012 season. UMC was looking to bounce back after a 14-inning 9-8 loss to Upper Iowa March 14 in Clearwater, Fla.
Luke Thoma (Jr., RHP, Little Falls, Minn./Natural Resources) got the game one start for the Golden Eagles. Thoma would give up six earned runs on 10 hits. Thoma would suffer the loss in the game.
The Peacocks would start out the scoring in game one in the bottom of the first. An Alex George double would drive in Luis Ravelo. Eric Cottrell would then hit a sacrifice fly to plate Mitch Moser.
Ravelo would triple in the bottom of the second to drive in Adam Budron to extend the Upper Iowa lead to 3-0.
The Peacocks would add another run in the third as Cottrell hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Jacob Greco to make it 4-0.
UMC would be able to tie up the game with one swing in the bottom of the fourth as they loaded up the bases and
David Anaya (So., 2B/SS, Tucson, Ariz./Health Science) came through in a big way. Anaya would hit his first home run in a Maroon and Gold uniform, which was also a grand slam. Anaya drove in
Jesse Jennings (Sr., OF, Robbinsdale, Minn./Criminal Justice),
Kenny Perez (Jr., 1B/DH, Orlando, Fla./Health Science) and
Thomas Kinsella (Jr., IF, North Branch, Minn./Sports and Rec Management).
The Peacocks would add three runs in the fifth to extend their lead to 7-4.
UMC would quickly bounce back and cut the deficit to 7-6 in the sixth when Perez hit a two-run home run to drive in himself and
Colton Haight (Sr., C/OF, Rogers, Minn./Sports and Rec Management).
The Peacocks would break open the game in the sixth as they scored eight runs. The scoring was led by a Jacob Stenberg grand slam.
Haight would hit a two-run home run in the seventh, but it would be too little for the Golde Eagles as they fell 15-8.
Blake Seehusen got the win for Upper Iowa after going one inning and giving up two earned runs on two hits.
UMC was led in game one by Perez, who was 2-of-3 with two runs scored and two RBI's.
Upper Iowa looked to Greco, who was 3-of-5 with four RBI's and two runs scored. Budron was 3-of-3 with three RBI's and one run scored.
In game two,
Jarad Nelson (Jr., RHP, Karlstad, Minn./Elementary Education) would get the start and give up four earned runs on 10 hits in seven innings.
Upper Iowa would start the scoring in the bottom of the first when Moser hit a two run home run to drive in himself and Ravelo.
The Golden Eagles would cut the lead to 2-1 in the third as
Dalton Parks (Jr., OF, West Valley City, Utah/Sports and Rec Management) scored on a groundout.
Perez would hit his second home run of the year and his fourth of the season to tie up the game 2-2 in the fourth.
The Peacocks would take the lead back 4-2 in the fifth led by a Moser solo home run, his second of the game.
UMC would again knot up the game at 4-4 in the seventh as
Ryan Haggstrom (Jr., IF/P, Apple Valley, Minn./Accounting) hit a sacrifice fly to score Parks and
Zach Frazier (R-Fr., C, Grand Rapids, Minn./Natural Resources) scored on an error.
The Golden Eagles would get the winning run in the top of the ninth off of Matt Banks as Parks scored on an error.
Cody Pamperin (So., RHP, Shakopee, Minn./Golf and Turf Management) would deal two solid innings of relief to get the win. Pamperin would shut down all six batters he faced.
UMC was led by Parks, who was 2-of-5 with three runs scored. Perez finished off a strong day, goign 2-of-4 with one run scored and one RBI.
Upper Iowa was led in game two by George, who was 4-of-4 with one RBI.
The Golden Eagles will face Upper Iowa in another doubleheader Sun., March 29 in Fayette, Iowa to complete the four-game series at 12 and 2 p.m.
