Golden Eagle Tennis Unable to Match Grizzlies and Huskies, Suffer Pair of 9-0 Losses

DULUTH, Minn.- The University of Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagle tennis team hosted the University of Montana Grizzlies at Choice Health and Fitness in Grand Forks, N.D., which is considered UMC's home turf.

The Grizzlies came to face Golden Eagles with a 2-4 overall record. At the No. 1 doubles, Catherine Brown (Jr., Powell Butte, Ore./Animal Science) together with Whitney Erickson (Fr., Spring Valley, Minn./Early Childhood Education) put up the biggest fight of all the UMC tennis players, but were unable to match Montana's No. 1 Anabel Carbo Estruch/Laurence Pelchat, falling 8-2.

At No. 2 doubles, Nikki Dogan (Fr., Grand Forks, ND/Health Science) who battled alongside Christina Smith (Fr. Oylen, Minn./Communications) could not overcome Grizzlies Cam Kincaid/Sasha Carter and their 8-1 win over the Golden Eagles.

No. 3 doubles saw Rachelle Alcini (Sr., Ann Arbor, Mich./Health Science) and Chelsea Burrows (So., Eagan, Minn./Criminal Justice) battle Catherine Orfanos/Hannah Sulz, with the result going in Montana's favor 8-0.

At singles, the University of Minnesota Golden Eagles were unfortunately no match to the University of Montana Grizzlies, falling 0-6 on each of No. 1 through No. 6.

At No.1 singles, Brown took on Sasha Carter, she could not hold Sasha Carter at bay, losing 0-6 and 0-6. At No. 2 singles, Erickson suffered a loss to Montana's Laurence Pelchat, 0-6, 0-6. No. 3 singles Smith for UMC went 0-6 and 0-6 against Hanna Sulz. Dogan at no. 4 singles suffered a loss to Cam Kincaid, 0-6 and 0-6 as well. UMC's Alcini at no. 5 singles could not handle Catherine Orfanos, losing 0-6 twice. At the no. 6 singles, Burrows lost 0-6, 0-6 to Anabel Carbo Estruch.

In Saturday's match, UMC took on NSIC foe St. Cloud State University and would fall 9-0. At No. 1 doubles, Brown and Erickson would fall to Abigail Kantor and Alexie Portz, 8-3, after putting up a fight. At the No. 2 spot, Dogan and Smith would get upended by El O'Brien and Marilla Roque Diversi, 8-0. At No. 3 doubles, Alcini and Burrows would drop the match 8-0 to Miranda Wynkoop and Lauren Makela.

In singles, O'Brien took down Brown, 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 1 slot. At No. 2 singles, Erickson would put up a fight against Kantor, falling 6-4 in the first set, but Kantor would take the second set, 6-1. At No. 3 singles, Roque Diversi upended Smith, 6-0, 6-0. At the No. 4 singles slot, Jamie Voelker defeated Dogan, 6-0, 6-0. At No. 5 singles, Portz upended Alcini, 6-0, 6-0. At the No. 5 slot, Jordee Matson would defeat Burrows, 6-0, 6-0.

UMC will take on University of Minnesota Duluth and Gustavus Adolphus College Sunday. Before the Golden Eagles return to their home turf, they are to face University of Sioux Falls, Augustana College and Bemidji State University in Bemidji, Minn.

UMC's four-match home stretch following the long road trips features Concordia College, University of Mary, Minnesota State University Moorhead and Bemidji State University.
