Golden Eagles Battle But Fall 58-48 to Northern State

Box Score ABERDEEN, S.D. – The University of Minnesota Crookston fell 58-48 to Northern State University Saturday night at Wachs Arena in Aberdeen, S.D. The Golden Eagles battled through most of the contest but Northern proved to be the better team on the night. UMC falls to 6-12 (4-10 NSIC) with the loss, while Northern State improves to 17-3 (11-3 NSIC).

Minnesota Crookston was led by 15 points and seven boards from Tyler West, Jr. (Sr., G/F, Porland, Ore./Communications). Kevin Larson (Sr., G, New Ulm, Minn./Sports and Rec Management) tallied 11 points and six rebounds, while Sam Howell (Sr., G, Seattle, Wash./Sports and Rec Management) added seven points.

The Golden Eagles shot 16-of-52 for 30.8 percent on the game and 6-of-21 for 28.6 percent from beyond the arc. In addition, they were 10-of-13 for 76.9 percent from the charity stripe.

Northern State was led by Seth Bachand's 19 points and six rebounds, while Tydan Storrusten added 12 points and six boards. The Wolves were 22-of-49 for 44.9 percent and 2-of-15 for 13.3 percent from beyond the arc.

Northern State out-rebounded UMC 41-26 on the night.

The Golden Eagles held their own in the first half, going toe-to-toe with Northern State for most of the period. UMC would trail 27-20 at the break.

The Golden Eagles looked to the strong shooting of Larson, who tallied nine points on 3-of-8 shooting from the field and 2-of-2 from beyond the arc. In addition to Larson, West had six points. UMC was 7-of-24 for 29.2 percent from the field and 3-of-9 for 33.3 percent from beyond the arc.

Northern State was led in the first half by Bachand's 13 points, while Mitch White added seven. Northern State out-rebounded UMC 20-13 in the first half. The Wolves were 10-of-25 from the field for 40 percent and 1-of-9 from beyond the arc for 11.1 percent.

Northern State would get a pair of quick buckets out of the break from D.J. Pollard and Skye Warwick to lead 31-20 with 18:49 left in the game. Lucas Reller (Sr., G, Lead, S.D./Management) would quickly stop the early run with a three from the top of the key to cut the early advantage to 31-23.

UMC would get the lead down to seven but Northern State would quickly get back out to an 11-point advantage with 13 minutes left. A basket in the lane from West and a free throws would pull UMC back to within eight at 38-30 with 12:20 left in the game.

A pair of free throws from Northern State's Storrusten would put Northern State back up 40-30 with 12:10 left in the game, but UMC would cut the lead back to eight with a Larson free-throw line jumper. A Jake Johnson bucket and a jumper from Mack Arvidson for Northern would again give NSU the 12-point advantage with 10 minutes left in the game.

Howell would come up with a big three to get UMC back to within eight points at 45-37 with seven minutes remaining, but a Bachand bucket would quickly push it back to 10. After free throws, John Hughes would hit a three and Howell would convert two free throws to get the Golden Eagles within 49-42 with 4:30 remaining.

An old-fashioned three-point play on the other end from Storrusten would push the lead for Northern back out to 10 with 4:20 left and a Warwick transition lay-in would give the Wolves a 12-point advantage with four minutes remaining.

Northern State would hang on for the 58-48 win over the Golden Eagles. UMC will take on Upper Iowa University Jan. 30 at 8 p.m. in Fayette, Iowa.
