Box Score 1 MINOT, N.D.- The University of Minnesota Crookston baseball team fell 16-4 and 6-5 to Minot State University Thurs., May 1 at Corbett Field in Minot, N.D. The series was the final road affair for the Golden Eagles for the 2014 season. The Golden Eagles fought hard in game two, rallying for two runs in the top of the ninth but a walk-off home run by Connor Moughtin sent the Beavers to the win.
The Golden Eagles drop to 1-43 (0-32 NSIC) with Thursday's pair of losses to Minot State. The Beavers improve to 16-21 (10-13 NSIC) with the victories.
The Beavers took the first game led by the play of Brad Rolff, who had five RBI's on the day with two home runs and a triple. In addition to his day at the plate, Rolff was able to catch a muskrat who ran onto the field in the fourth inning.
Thane Larson (Sr., P, Grantsburg, Wis./Natural Resources) got the start for the Golden Eagles and would suffer the loss after pitching 3.1 innings and giving up 10 earned runs on 11 hits.
The Golden Eagles got things started in the first inning with two runs on four hits.
Patrick Higgins (Fr., OF, Eagan, Minn./Criminal Justice) would cross the plate for the first run of the game as Minot State appeared to have
Ryan Haggstrom (So., C/1B/P, Apple Valley, Minn./Accounting) picked off, but an errant throw by the short stop would move Haggstrom to third and allow Higgins to score.
UMC would add a second run as
Colton Haight (So., C, Buffalo, Minn./Sports and Rec Management) singled through the right side to socre Haggstrom. UMC would load up the bases with two outs, but Minot State would find a way out of the inning.
Minot State would score three runs apiece in the first and second innings and one in the third. The Beavers had a big inning in the fourth with five runs on five hits. The Beavers were led in the inning by Rolff, who hit a two-run home run.
The Golden Eagles would add a run in the fourth as
Marcus Campbell (So., OF/P, St. Croix Falls, Wis./Golf and Turf Management) scored on a fielder's choice. UMC would add another run in the sixth as
Jeremiah Friday (Sr., 1B/C, Rush City, Minn./Natural Resources) hit his first home run of the year belting the ball over the left field wall.
The win for game one for Minot State went to Jesse Goertzen, who went four innings, giving up just one earned run on six hits.
Richie Navratil (Sr., P, Blansko, Czech Republic/Sports and Rec Management) would pitch in relief for UMC in game one, going 2.2 innings and giving up four earned runs on seven hits.
In addition to Rolff, who was 3-of-5 with three runs scored and five runs batted in (RBI's), Andrew Roach was 4-of-5 with four runs scored and three RBI's.
Minnesota Crookston looked to Friday, who had arguably the best game of his career, going 3-of-3 with one RBI and one run scored.
Cody Pamperin (Fr., P, Shakopee, Minn./Golf and Turf Management) would get the start in game two and would keep the Golden Eagles in the fray. Pamperin went 7.1 innings, giving up five earned runs on 10 hits before being pulled in the eighth due to an injury.
After a scoreless first and top of the second, the Beavers would get things going in the bottom of the second when A.J. Begay hit a solo home run.
The Golden Eagles would knot things up in the top of the third when
Matt Korte (Sr., P/3B, St. Cloud, Minn./Accounting) hit a sacrifice fly to plate
Josh Brehmer (Sr., 2B/SS, Falcon Heights, Minn./Communications).
Minot State would add two runs in their half of the third. A Sean Arbaut triple would drive in C.J. Lyte. Moughtin would then single to drive in Arbaut.
The Golden Eagles would cut the lead to 3-2 in the fourth when a Brehmer walk with the bases loaded scored Friday. UMC would still have the bases juiced but were unable to get any more runs.
UMC would knot things up in the sixth when a Higgins single drove in Buttermore.
The seventh would prove to be a long inning, despite Pamperin giving up just one hit. A ball up the middle caused Korte and Brehmer to collide. Brehmer was taken to the hospital by ambulance where he was found to have a concussion, more than likely ending his career as a Golden Eagle prior to Senior Day. In addition to being the all-time hits leader, Brehmer also has the records for total bases, games played, games started, as well as being in the top 10 for several other categories.
Minot State would extend their lead to 5-3 in the bottom of the eighth as Tyler Stevenson scored on a wild pitch and then Arbaut singled to drive in Lyte.
The Golden Eagles would counter in the top of the ninth, their last hance. Korte, down to his final few games of his career, came up in a big spot with a triple in the gap to drive in Higgins and
Richie Navratil (Sr., P, Blansko, Czech Republic/Sports and Rec Management).
Campbell who came on to pitch in the eighth, pitched the ninth to try to the game to extras. However, Moughtin would hit a walk-off home run to send Minot State to victory.
Campbell would suffer the loss after pitching one inning and giving up one earned run on two hits.
Higgins led UMC in game two, going 3-of-5 with one RBI and one run scored.
Jesse Jennings (Jr., OF, Robbinsdale, Minn./Criminal Justice) was 2-of-4 for the game.
Minot State was led by Moughtin, who was 2-of-4 with two RBI's and one run scored. In addition, Arbaut was 2-of-5 with one run scored and two RBI's.
The Golden Eagles will wrap up the season as they host University of Minnesota Duluth Sat., May 3 at 1:30 and 3:30 p.m. and Sun., May 4 at 12 and 2 p.m. The Golden Eagles will hold Senior Day on Saturday and will honor their Senior Class in between games. UMC will honor Minnesota Duluth's seniors Sunday as they will not play a home game in 2014.
