UMC Baseball Falls 20-0 and 15-2 to St. Cloud State in Mid-Week Tilt

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MOORHEAD, Minn. - The University of Minnesota Crookston baseball team was unable to contain St. Cloud State University's bats Wednesday as they fell 20-0 and 15-2 at Cobber Baseball Field in Moorhead, Minn. The Huskies combined for 41 hits in the two games. The Golden Eagles fall to 1-25 (0-14 NSIC) with the doubleheader loss. St. Cloud State improves to 21-6 (10-3 NSIC) as they pick up the sweep.

UMC's pitchers struggled overall to keep the potent St. Cloud State bats at bay in the series. The Huskies would tally 22 hits and 20 runs in game one led by a 3-for-4 performance from Zach Hoffmann, who had two Runs Batted In (RBI's) and two runs scored in game one. In addition, Karl Sorensen was 2-of-4 with three run scored.

The Golden Eagle start in game one went to Ryan Paasch (Sr., P, Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sports and Rec Management), his first start of the season after primarily coming out of the pen to open the year. Paasch had a strong first inning but would struggle in the second, giving up 11 runs as the St. Cloud State bats exploded for 11 runs on 10 hits in the inning. Paasch would finish with nine earned runs on 10 hits in 1.1 innings as he suffered the loss.

St. Cloud State's second inning explosion was led by a two-run single by Eric Loxtercamp, which drove in Sorensen and Reese Gregory. Mike Jurgella also had a clutch double to center field to score Brandon Arnold and Loxtercamp.

Cayden Barta (Fr., P, Fargo, N.D./Criminal Justice) would come in to pitch 4.2 innings of relief for the Golden Eagles and would give up seven earned runs on 11 hits. Trevor Buttermore (So., P, North St. Paul, Minn./Criminal Justice) had a strong inning of work, giving up just one hit and no runs.

The win in game one went to Logan Spitzack, who improved to 2-1 on the season after going five innings and giving up just three hits in the shutout. Karsen Formsman also pitched two innings and would give up no hits and no runs to combine with Spitzack for the shutout.

Minnesota Crookston's bats were led in game one by Travis Magdzas (Jr., OF, Duluth, Minn./Criminal Justice), who was 2-for-3 for the game.

The Golden Eagles would get off to a strong start in game two. After two shutout innings on the mound from Matt Korte (Sr., P/3B, St. Cloud, Minn./Accounting), UMC would be the first to get on the scoreboard.

With two runners in scoring position and one out, Head Coach Chris Vito made a gutsy call and put on the suicide squeeze as Magdzas took off from third as the ball was released from the St. Cloud State players hand and Tony Madsen (Sr., SS, Mounds View, Minn./Natural Resources) put down a great bunt, making it impossible to stop Magdzas to put UMC ahead 1-0.

St. Cloud State would however answer off Korte, with a big six-run inning to make it 6-1. The Huskies' were led by a two-run double from Jurgella to score Kyle Leiser and Travis Enger. Gregory also had a two-run double, plating Garrett Fischer and Hoffmann.

The Golden Eagles would inch closer, cutting the lead to 6-2 as Josh Brehmer (Sr., 2B/SS, Falcon Heights, Minn./Communications) singled to plate Jesse Jennings (Jr., OF, Robbinsdale, Minn./Criminal Justice).

However St. Cloud State would again explode for eight runs off of Jon Mittag (Sr., P, Glenville, Minn./Sports and Rec Management) to make it 14-2.

The Huskies would add one more run in the end to earn the 15-2 win. Ryan Diers would get the win after allowing two earned runs on three hits in four innings.

Cody Pamperin (Fr., P, Shakopee, Minn./Golf and Turf Management) also pitched for UMC and had a strong outing, giving up one earned run on four hits in two innings.

The Golden Eagle bats were led in game two by Magdzas once again, who was 1-for-3 with one run scored.

St. Cloud State looked to Enger, who was 4-for-5 with one RBI and two runs scored while Jurgella was 2-for-3 with three RBI's and two runs scored.

The Golden Eagles are slated to play Minnesota State University, Mankato Saturday and Sunday in Crookston, Minn. More details on the date and location of these games due to field conditions will be announced in the near future on goldeneaglesports.com.
