Box Score 2 BEMIDJI, Minn.- The University of Minnesota Crookston battled to the bitter end Tues., April 22 in a pair of Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) road games at BSU Baseball Field. The Golden Eagles came up just short of Bemidji State University 5-4 and 3-2. The Beavers used a walk-off single from Collin Eckman to drive in Bo Schmitz in the bottom fo the seventh of game one. In game two, BSU plated three runs in the seventh inning, led by a Chad Hanson double.
Minnesota Crookston was seeking their first NSIC wins of the year, but fell just short in both games. UMC is 1-37 (0-26 NSIC) on the season, while Bemidji State moves to 18-15 (12-8 NSIC).
The Golden Eagles had outstanding pitching performances from both
Jon Mittag (Sr., P, Glenville, Minn./Sports and Rec Management) and
Cody Pamperin (Fr., P, Shakopee, Minn./Golf and Turf Management) on the day.
Mittag got the ball in game one and went six innings, allowing four earned runs on nine hits in the loss. Mittag has shown marked improvement over his last couple of outings for Minnesota Crookston.
In game two, Pamperin got his first career start and pitched eight innings, giving up just three earned runs on eight hits. Pamperin had a four-hit shutout for the Golden Eagles going into the seventh inning. The freshman would suffer the heartbreaking loss in game two.
The Golden Eagles got the game one scoring started as
Marcus Campbell (So., OF/P, St. Croix Falls, Wis./Golf and Turf Management) singled to drive in
Travis Magdzas (Jr., OF, Duluth, Minn./Criminal Justice).
The Beavers would respond with a couple of runs of their own in the third and fifth to go ahead 2-1 on UMC. Tyler Nelson led the BSU scoring with a double in the third to drive in Logan Riedel.
The Golden Eagles would add three runs in the top of the sixth to find themselves tih a 4-2 advantage on Bemidji State.
Colton Haight (So., C, Buffalo, Minn./Sports and Rec Management) came up with a clutch double to drive in Magdzas and
Ryan Haggstrom (So., C/1B/P, Apple Valley, Minn./Accounting).
Tony Madsen (Sr., 2B/SS, Mounds View, Minn./Natural Resources) would single to drive in Haight.
The Beavers would rally for one run in the sixth and two in the seventh led by Eckman's single to thwart UMC's win hopes in game one.
Drake Huggans got the win in relief for Bemidji State, going 1.2 innings and giving up just one earned run on three hits.
Magdzas led the UMC effort, going 2-of-3 with two runs scored. In addition, Haggstrom was 2-of-4 with one run scored.
Bemidji State looked to Hanson in game one. The leadoff hitter was 2-of-4 with one RBI and one run scored.
In game two, the Golden Eagles would score the lone run in the first six innings as they plated
Josh Brehmer (Sr., 2B/SS, Falcon Heights, Minn./Communication) on a sacrifice fly from Haggstrom.
The first six innings were highlighted by dominating pitching from Pamperin and Mike Hanson. Hanson would pitch six innings, giving up no earned runs on four hits.
BSU would respond as Cole Bjorge crossed the plate on a Jake Braun sacrifice fly and Hanson double to drive in Terry Hadden and Dylan Webb to give BSU the 3-1 lead.
The Golden Eagles would cut into the advantage with a
Matt Korte (Sr., OF/P, St. Cloud, Minn./Accounting) single in the eighth to drive in Haggstrom. However, UMC would come just short again as BSU held on for a 3-2 win.
Nate Helsick would earn the win in relief for BSU, going two innings and allowing no earned runs on three hits.
Joey Hanowski led BSU, as well, going 2-of-3 for the game.
The Golden Eagles will return hom Saturday and Sunday as they host Southwest Minnesota State University at the UMC Baseball Field.
The Golden Eagles were led in game two by Korte, who was 2-of-4 with one RBI.
