Box Score 2 CROOKSTON, Minn.- The University of Minnesota Crookston baseball team fell 9-2 and 12-0 in the series concluding doubleheader against Wayne State College (Neb.) Sat., April 19 on a beautiful day at UMC Baseball Field in Crookston, Minn. The Wildcats used the 20 mile per hour wind to their advantage, belting five home runs across the two games Saturday.
Minnesota Crookston falls to 1-35 (0-24 NSIC) with the doubleheader loss. Wayne State improves to 20-17 (13-10 NSIC) as they pick up the sweep.
Trevor Buttermore (So., P/3B, North St. Paul, Minn./Criminal Justice) got the game one start for Minnesota Crookston. Buttermore threw five innings, giving up eight runs, only four of them earned, on nine hits.
Ryan Paasch (Sr., P, Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sports and Rec Management) would throw a spectacular sixth inning, striking out the side, in the seventh he would give up a home run to Chris May, ending the game with just one earned run on one hit.
Dylan McGill got the game one win for Wayne State, throwing four innings and giving up one earned run on three hits with nine strikeouts to his name.
Wayne State would start the scoring in the first with a Curtis Bussard RBI single to drive in Zac Leighton.
The Wildcats would add three more runs in the second starting with a Jake Perez home run. Alex Schleppenbach would then reach on an error by the first baseman
Jeremiah Friday (Sr., 1B/C, Rush City, Minn./Natural Resources), allowing Aaron Molinaro to score. May would then hit a single to plate Schleppenbach to make it 4-0.
The Golden Eagles would cut the advantage to 4-2 as
Patrick Higgins (Fr., OF/2B, Eagan, Minn./Criminal Justice) singled to right field to score
Tony Madsen (Sr., 2B/SS, Mounds View, Minn./Natural Resources).
Wayne State would add three more runs in the fourth, one in the fifth and one in the seventh.
The Golden Eagles would get their second run in the sixth when
Travis Magdzas (Jr., OF, Duluth, Minn./Criminal Justice) grounded out to short stop, allowing
Matt Korte (Sr., 3B/P, St. Cloud, Minn./Accounting) to score.
Madsen led Minnesota Crookston in game one, going 2-for-3 with one run scored.
Wayne State looked to May, who was 3-of-3 with three runs scored and two RBI's, In addition to May, Perez was 2-of-4 with two RBI's and one run scored.
The game two start for UMC went to
Thane Larson (Sr., P, Grantsburg, Wis./Natural Resources) who would give up nine earned runs on 10 hits with one strikeout.
Paasch would also pitch in game two, giving up one earned run on two hits.
Jon Mittag (Sr., P, Glenville, Minn./Sports and Rec Management) came in for game two and went two innings, giving up two earned runs on four hits.
Cody Pamperin (Fr., P, Shakopee, Minn./Golf and Turf Management) would finish up the game, pitching a scoreless seventh inning, with just one hit allowed.
Nick Ragan would get the win for Wayne State, tossing five scoreless innings and allowing just four hits with five strikeouts.
Wayne State would have home runs from Leighton, Michael Herman and Nick McIntee in the game. Leighton actually led off the game with a home run. The Wildcats would score 12 runs on 17 hits.
Wayne State was led overall by Bussard, who was 3-of-4 with one RBI and one run scored and Herman, who was 3-of-5 with three RBI's and two runs scored
The Golden Eagles were paced by hits from
Josh Brehmer (Sr., 2B/SS, Falcon Heights, Minn./Communications),
Ryan Haggstrom (So., 1B/C/P, Apple Valley, Minn./Accounting),
Colton Haight (So., C, Buffalo, Minn./Sports and Rec Management) and
Marcus Campbell (So., OF/P, St. Croix Falls, Wis./Golf and Turf Management) all had hits for UMC.
The Golden Eagles will return to the field against Bemidji State University at 2 and 4 p.m. at the BSU Baseball Field in Bemidji, Minn. Wed., April 23.
