Box Score 2 CROOKSTON, Minn.- The University of Minnesota Crookston baseball team had their most impressive day on the mound this season with outstanding outings from
Matt Korte (Sr., P/3B, St. Cloud, Minn./Accounting) and
Richie Navratil (Sr., P, Blansko, Czech Republic/Sports and Rec Management). However, UMC was unable to capitalize on scoring chances in game two and were no-hit by Eric Browning in game one as they fell 4-0 and 3-1 to Wayne State College (Neb.).
The Golden Eagles drop to 1-33 (0-22 NSIC) with the pair of losses to the Wildcats. Wayne State improves to 18-17 (11-10 NSIC) with Friday's wins.
Korte started for the Golden Eagles in game one and put together his best outing of the season, throwing a complete game and allowing just three earned runs on four hits. However, UMC's bats were unable to solve Browning in the first game as Korte suffered the loss despite a strong performance.
Browning commanded the strike zone all game, throwing a complete game no-hit shutout, he did walk three batters in the game though. Browning would strike out 13 Golden Eagles en route to the no-hitter.
Alex Scheppenbach started out the scoring as he put down a good bunt to score Michael Herman, who had led off the inning with a double.
The Wildcats would add three runs in fourth. Alex Kreft started things out with a single through the left side to plate Jake Perez. An Aaron Krier sacrifice fly would then score Nick McIntee to make it 3-0. Wayne State would finish out the frame as Zac Leighton reached on a ball that went through the legs of
Trevor Buttermore (So., P/3B, North St. Paul, Minn./Criminal Justice) for an error. Schleppenbach would score on the error to make it 4-0.
Korte would shut down the Wildcats the rest of the way, allowing just three hits in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings.
Browning would not put a man on base until he walked
Marcus Campbell (So., OF/P, St. Croix Falls, Wis./Golf and Turf Management) in the fifth inning.
Wayne State was led by Herman, who went 2-for-4 with one run scored and Kreft, who was 2-for-3 with an RBI.
In game two, Navratil would get the ball for Minnesota Crookston. The senior would get back to way he pitched to open up the 2014 season. Navratil would throw over 120 pitches in the complete nine-inning game Friday. He would give up just three earned runs on eight hits with five strikeouts.
Navratil and Matt Russell would go toe-to-toe in a pitcher's dual in game two. Russell would throw six innings, pitching a shutout, allowing just five hits and striking out three. Russell would get the win for Wayne State, while Ryan Zweck woudl come on for the save, giving up one hit in the ninth.
The story of the game for UMC was missed opportunities as Wayne State would win 3-1. The Golden Eagles would have nine hits in the game, but would leave 10 runners on the base paths.
UMC would pose the first threat of the game in the bottom of the first as they had runners in scoring position with one out following base hits from
Patrick Higgins (Fr., OF, Eagan, Minn./Criminal Justice) and
Ryan Haggstrom (So., C/1B/P, Apple Valley, Minn./Accounting). Both players woudl advance a base on a wild pitch but would be unable to score as the Wildcats secured the final two outs of the inning.
Navratil would have a no-hitter going for Minnesota Crookston into the fourth wehn Leighton broke it up with a leadoff single to right center.
Wayne State would break the scoring stalemate in the fifth when Kevin Andersen reached on a fielder's choice, allowing Perez to score.
Colton Haight (So., C, Buffalo, Minn./Sports and Rec Management) appeared to have the tag on Perez, but the runner was ruled safe.
The Wildcats would add two runs in the sixth as Herman singled to drive in C.J. Nolen. Perez would then double to bring Herman in, to make the score 3-0. A single from Skye O'Neil appeared to be bringing in a third run in the inning but a strong throw from Higgins would get the runner out at home.
UMC would pose a threat in the sixth as Higgins singled to lead off the inning. Higgins would be thrown out on an attempted steal. With two outs, Korte would single and Haight would walk to give UMC two more base-runners but a strike out for Wayne State would get the Wildcats out of the inning.
The Golden Eagles would again threaten in the seventh. A walk of Buttermore would lead off the inning.
Jesse Jennings (Jr., OF, Robbinsdale, Minn./Criminal Justice) would then single. However, back-to-back strikeouts would again get Wayne State out of danger.
The Golden Eagles would finally get on the board in the eighth. Haggstrom started out the inning but smashing a ball to left, that would be ruled a ground-rule double. Haggstrom would advance to third on a wild pitch and woudl score as Korte hit a ball off the pitcher for an infield single.
With the score 3-1, UMC would have the last chance in the bottom of the ninth. Jennings would get on with a single to left, however that would be all the Golden Eagles could muster as they fell 3-1 to Wayne State despite an impressive pitching performance from Navratil.
Haggstrom would lead UMC in game two, going 2-of-4 with one run scored. Korte also had a strong game, going 2-of-4 with one RBI, while Higgins was 2-of-5 and Jennings was 2-of-4.
Wayne State was led in game two by Perez, who was 2-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored.
The Golden Eagles will wrap up the series with Wayne State Sat., April 19 at 12 and 2 p.m. at the UMC Baseball Field.
