Mittag Pitches Strong in 3-0 Loss in Game One; Concordia-St. Paul Bats Ignite in 16-1 Loss in Game Two

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ST. PAUL, Minn..- The University of Minnesota Crookston baseball team fell 3-0 and 16-1 to Concordia University, St. Paul, Tues., April 15 at Barnes Field in St. Paul, Minn. The Golden Eagles got strong pitching from Jon Mittag (Sr., P, Glenville, Minn./Sports and Rec Management) in game one, and struggled overall in game two, giving up five runs in the first inning to the Golden Bears.

Minnesota Crookston falls to 1-31 overall, while they are now 0-20 in NSIC play. Concordia-St. Paul improves to 18-8 (10-6 NSIC) with the doubleheader sweep Tuesday.

Mittag got the ball in game one and went a complete game, giving up three earned runs on seven hits. The senior pitcher would give up just three hits and pitch a shutout through four before giving up three runs in the fifth. The outing was by far Mittag's best outing, as the pitcher had struggled through his first seven appearances on the mound.

The game would be a pitcher's dual through the first four innings before Mittag and Concordia-St. Paul pitcher Kevin Woebke, who would pitch a complete game, giving up just six hits in the shutout victory.

Concordia-St. Paul would break through in the fifth when Brooks Beilke singled to drive in Kyle Dalton. Tyler Krekling double would add two more runs as Beilke and Ryan Poppitz crossed the plate to make it 3-0.

Mittag would return to form in the final two innings, giving up just one hit.

The Golden Eagles would put up a fight in the sixth. With two outs, Colton Haight (So., C, Buffalo, Minn./Sports and Rec Management) would double to give UMC a base-runner. Marcus Campbell (So., OF/P, St. Croix Falls, Wis./Golf and Turf Management) would then lace a single to give UMC runners on the corners with two outs. But Woebke would pitch out of the inning and that would be the biggest threat UMC would pose. The Golden Bears would hang on for the 3-0 win.

Minnesota Crookston was led by Josh Brehmer (Sr., 2B/SS, Falcon Heights, Minn./Communications), who was 2-for-3, as was Matt Korte (Sr., 3B/P, St. Cloud, Minn./Accounting).

Concordia-St. Paul was paced by Krekling, who was 2-for-3 with two runs batted in (RBI). Beilke was 2-for-3 with one RBI and one run scored.

In game two, Ryan Paasch (Sr., P, Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sports and Rec Management) got the start. Paasch would struggle, giving up 12 earned run on 13 hits. Cody Pamperin (Fr., P, Shakopee, Minn./Golf and Turf Management) would come on and pitch well, giving up just three earned runs on four hits in three innings.

Campbell would make his first pitching appearance in the eighth, going one inning and giving up just one hit.

The Golden Bears would score 12 runs in the first three innings and would add four in the sixth.

Minnesota Crookston's run came in third as Korte had an RBI single to drive in Patrick Higgins (Fr., OF, Eagan, Minn./Criminal Justice).

Concordia-St. Paul was led by Eric Fasnacht, who was 4-of-4 with three RBI's and three runs scored, while David Henke, was 3-of-5 with two RBI's and two runs scored.

The Golden Eagles are slated to play Wayne State College (Neb.) Fri., April 18 and Sat., April 19 in their home debuts at UMC Baseball Field, as long as weather cooperates. The games have been moved from an original Thursday and Friday schedule due to more favorable temperatures scheduled for Friday and Saturday.
