Golden Eagles Fall on Suicide Squeeze in 12 inning Thriller 7-6 in Game One; Drop Game Two 20-3 to UMD

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CROOKSTON, Minn.  – The University of Minnesota Crookston went toe-to-toe with the University of Minnesota Duluth in game one, playing five extra innings until the Bulldogs would get a run across on a suicide squeeze in the bottom of the 12th to win 7-6. Game two would go UMD's way as they used 11 runs in the sixth inning to take a 20-3 victory and win the series 3-1 over the Golden Eagles.

The Golden Eagles are now 1-36 on the season and 1-22 in the NSIC. The University of Minnesota Duluth improves to 11-21 (11-8 NSIC).

The University of Minnesota Crookston started game one with a strong hitting performance; unfortunately it seemed like everything they hit was right at the Bulldogs defense except for a solo shot by J.C. Crane (Sr., C/OF/P, Tucson, Ariz.) which cleared the left field wall. Joe Miller (So., P, Winona, Minn.) was able to get ahead of batters. However, the Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs were able to find the holes, gaps, and grass wherever it was available early on.

In the fifth inning the Golden Eagles started finding the holes when Ryan Haggstrom (Fr., C/1B/OF, Apple Valley, Minn.) hit an RBI single to score Matt Korte (Jr., IF/OF/P, St. Cloud, Minn.). In the following at bat Kameron Crandall (R-Fr., IF/P, Zimmerman, Minn.) followed up with a two RBI double over the center fielder's head. Crane hit the ball to the same part of the field but ended up with a triple which scored Crandall giving the Eagles the lead at 5-4. Cesar Espinoza hits a chopper to second which brought J.C. home extending the lead to two runs. UMC would finish the fifth inning scoring five runs on five hits.

UMD bounced back in the bottom of the inning taking Joe Miller out of the game by getting two runs off of him. Joe Miller left the game with the bases loaded and two outs recorded.

Thane Larson (Jr., P, Grantsburg, Wis.) would replace Joe Miller and recorded the out to keep the game tied at six.

In the very next inning Larson surrendered a double which proved to be the game-tying run for UMD. After loading the bases with two outs Tommy Bodeker had the opportunity to take the lead for Duluth but flew out to right field to end the inning.

In the top of the ninth Josh Brehmer (Jr., 2B/SS, Roseville, Minn.) led the inning off with a single to left center and eventually was moved over by a sacrifice bunt from Haggstrom. Brehmer was stranded on second base leaving the door open for the Bulldogs in the bottom of the inning.

In the bottom of the tenth UMD stranded another runner on second base.

Brehmer picked up his third hit of the day in the top of the eleventh and ended up staying there as UMD was unable to bring him around the bases.

Ryan Paasch (Jr., P, Sauk Rapids, Minn.) pitched out of another jam in the bottom of the eleventh stranding a runner on third and first.

After five innings of extra baseball, the Bulldogs would come up the win in the twelfth inning on a suicide squeeze with the bases loaded. Missed opportunities by UMC were crucial as they stranded nine base runners.

Chris Couillard would get the win for UMD after coming on to pitch the 12th inning. Couillard would give up no hits and no runs in his one inning pitched. Jimmy Herk got the game one start for UMD and went five innings, giving up six runs, five of them earned, on eight hits. Matt Mattiacci, Bo Hellquist and Charlie Conkel would also pitch for Bulldogs in the extra inning affair.

Paasch would get the loss for UMC after going four innings in relief and giving up one run on six hits. Starter Joe Miller would go four-and-two-thirds innings, giving up six runs, four of them earned, on nine hits.

UMD jumped out to a quick lead in the first inning of game two scoring one run on two hits one of which was a triple. The typical wind of the Red River Valley gave outfielders a challenge when it came to judging fly balls as Duluth capitalized on their chances; scoring again in the second inning from Engebretsen's double to the wall.

John Meyer started for the Bulldogs and he was hot early sending down the first nine batters he faced.

Alex Wojciechowski hit a bomb to lead off the third inning making it 3-0 UMD.

Brehmer was the first UMC base runner ending a no-hitter for Meyer to lead off the fourth inning with a single. The Golden Eagles made their adjustments the second time facing Meyer with two singles to lead off the fourth and then a big time triple from Crane to score Brehmer and Haggstrom. Espinoza drove in Crane with a single through the left side to tie up the game.

The tie was broken up in the bottom of the inning by a double from Engebretsen which scored one run. The Bulldogs added to the lead in the fifth with a two run home run by Comer making it a four run deficit for UMC.

UMD's bats stayed hot tacking on a total of four runs on four hits in the fifth inning. The Bulldogs continued producing by putting up eleven runs on nine hits putting the Bulldogs up 20 to 3. This ended up being the final score in today's contest which gave the Bulldogs two wins in the doubleheader.

Meyer would get the win for the UMD after going six innings and giving up three earned runs on six hits.

Jon Mittag (Jr., P, Glenville, Minn.) got the game two start for the Golden Eagles and would suffer the loss after giving up five runs on seven hits. Trevor Buttermore (Fr., P, North St. Paul, Minn.) and Kyle Kleven (So., P, Larimore, N.D.) would pitch in relief for the Golden Eagles.

Sunday was "Senior Day" as the Golden Eagles honored seniors Prill, Crane, Espinosa and Adrian Romo (Sr., P, Douglas, Ariz.) all appearing in some of their last home games in the Maroon and Gold. The seniors were honored along with head coach Chris Vito and athletic director Stephanie Helgeson prior to game two.

UMC will return to action Wed., May 1 as the Golden Eagles face Minot State University at 1:30 and 3:30 p.m.
