Golden Eagles Drop Doubleheader to St. Cloud State 7-1 and 10-0

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MINNEAPOLIS  – The University of Minnesota Crookston baseball team fell 7-1 and 10-0 in a mid-week Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) doubleheader against St. Cloud State University Tues., April 2 at Mall of America Field at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome. The Golden Eagles fall to 0-23 (0-10 NSIC) with the pair of losses. St. Cloud State improves to 17-2 (15-2 NSIC) with the pair of victories over UMC.
 
The early-morning doubleheader got under way at 6:30 a.m. from the Metrodome with game two commencing at 8 a.m. Tuesday's games mark the 13th and 14th games respectively that UMC has played at the Metrodome due mostly to the weather in the region this winter.
 
Richie Navratil (So., P, Blansko, Czech Republic) got the start in game one against the Huskies and would go four innings, giving up seven earned runs on seven hits against the Huskies. Navratil falls to 0-3 with Tuesday's game one loss.
 
St. Cloud State would strike early as they would get four runs in the bottom of the first inning to take an early 4-0 advantage over UMC. Eric Loxtercamp got the Huskies going with a two-run home run driving in Phil Imholte. Michael Jurgella then hit a double down the left field line to score Scott Borman, who had doubled to get on base The final run of the inning came as Travis Cariveau singled to left center to drive in Jurgella.
 
The Golden Eagles would cut the advantage to 4-1 in the top of the third after Ryan Haggstrom (Fr., P/UT, Apple Valley, Minn.) singled to drive in Brooks Miller (So., IF/OF/P, Moorhead, Minn.). The Golden Eagles would leave two runners stranded in the inning.
 
Navratil stopped the Huskies over the next three innings as he would allow no hits during that time, with the only two base-runners being two walks. However, St. Cloud State would add two runs off of Navratil in the bottom of the fifth as Borman doubled to right field to plate Garrett Fischer. Jurgella made it back-to-back doubles to drive in Borman and make it 6-1 Huskies.
 
Kyle Kleven (So., P, Larimore, N.D.) would then come on in relief of Navratil. After striking out the first batter, Cariveau would hit a sacrifice fly and Jurgella would steal home to make it 7-1, the run would be charged to Navratil. Kleven would finish the game, going two innings, while giving up two hits and allowing no earned runs. Kleven has pitched 7.2 innings so far this season and has yet to allow an earned run.
 
Scott Lieser would get the victory for St. Cloud State after going five innings, giving up one earned run on three hits with three strikeouts.
 
Jordan Prill (Sr., 1B/OF/P, Melrose, Minn.) led the team going 2-for-3 on the game while St. Cloud State was led by Eric Loxtercamp, who went 2-for-4 with two RBI's and one run scored, and Jurgella, who was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI's.
 
Haggstrom would get the start on the mound in game two against St. Cloud State. The freshman would pitch a shutout through three innings until the Huskies finally got to him for three runs in the fourth inning. Haggstrom would pitch 3.2 innings, giving up just five hits and three earned runs.
 
The Huskies would only get two hits in the first three innings, but their fourth-inning onslaught would start as Borman doubled to right field to plate Fischer. With the bases loaded, Cariveau then singled to left field to score Borman and Karl Sorensen to make it 3-0. After hitting a batter, Haggstrom would be pulled in favor of Ryan Paasch (Jr., P, Sauk Rapids, Minn.). Paasch would get the final out of the inning as Loxtercamp grounded out to second base.
 
St. Cloud State would add two more runs in the bottom of the fifth as Borman doubled to right field to score Fischer and Sorensen singled to plate Borman and make it 5-0 at the end of the inning.
 
Four more runs would come off of Paasch in the bottom of the sixth. Loxtercamp started out the scoring as he reached on fielder's choice, allowing Travis Enger to score. Fischer then singled to center field to plate Imholte. Borman would single in the next at-bat to drive in Loxtercamp. The final run of the inning would come as Jurgella flied out to center field to score Fischer and make it 9-0.
 
Thane Larson (Jr., P, Grantsburg, Wis.) would come in to pitch the seventh inning for the Golden Eagles. St. Cloud State would get their 10th and final run as Lieser singled to center field to score Imholte, who reached on an error by UMC left fielder Prill. The game would be called due to the 10 runs after seven innings rule.
 
Garrett Anderson from St. Cloud State would get the win to improve to 1-0 after going three innings and giving up just one hit. Nick Maiers would come on in relief and go four innings, giving up just one hit.
 
J.C. Crane (Sr., C/OF/P, Tucson, Ariz.) and Jesse Jennings (So., IF/OF, Robbinsdale, Minn.) would get the two hits for the Golden Eagles.
 
UMC is scheduled to play homes games against Northern State University April 6 and 7 in Crookston, Minn. Coach Chris Vito is currently looking to move those games to an alternate site due to the snow that still is on the UMC Baseball Field. More details will come on the status of those games as it comes to light.
