Golden Eagle Men’s Basketball Picks Up Non-Conference Road Win Over Jamestown 88-79

JAMESTOWN, N.D.
- The University of Minnesota Crookston men's basketball team wrapped up their non-conference slate with a 88-77 win over the University of Jamestown in a road contest at the Jamestown Civic Center in Jamestown, N.D.

The Jimmies got things close late at 81-75 with 1:17 remaining but the Golden Eagles would hang on for the win. UMC improves to 3-1 on the season while Jamestown falls to 4-5 on the year.

Minnesota Crookston was led on the game by a strong night from Brandon Burns (Sr., F, Baton Rouge, La./Sports and Rec Management), who would finish with 26 points on 10-of-16 shooting and 2-of-5 shooting from trey. Ashton Harrell (Sr., G, Houston, Texas/Sports and Rec Management) added 19 points while Derrick Redd (So., G, Menifee, Calif./Sports and Rec Management) added 18 points. Harrell was 4-of-12 from the field but 10-of-15 from the charity stripe. Redd was 5-of-7 from the field and 7-of-8 from the free throw line.

The Golden Eagles were led on the board by sophomore John Hughes (F, Tualatin, Ore./Management), who had 12 boards to go with seven points off the bench. Minnesota Crookston was 25-of-50 for the game for 50 percent and went 5-of-15 for 33.3 percent from trey. The Golden Eagles also connected well from the free-throw lin as they went 33-of-42 for the game, shooting 17 more free throws than the Jimmies. The Golden Eagles had 31 bench points and 15 second-chance points.

Jamestown was led on the game by Brequan Tucker with 18 points on 6-of-13 shooting.  Matt Wingo, who was 7-of-10 shooting on the game, added 16 points. Mark Hoge had 15, as did Breshion Tucker and Taylor Newton had 12 points. Hoge led the Jimmies with three treys.

Jamestown finished the game shooting 27-of-59 for 45.7 percent and 9-of-25 for 36 percent from trey but were just 16-of-26 for 64.0 percent from the free-throw line. The Golden Eagles also out-rebounded their counterparts 43 to 24.

The Golden Eagles went into the break with a 49-41 advantage over the Jimmies led by the first-half play of Burns and Harrell. Burns was 7-of-11 from the field for 16 points and was 2-for-3 from beyond the arc. Harrell was 3-of-7 from the field and 5-of-7 from the charity stripe in the opening period. Redd and Hughes each added five points apiece.

Minnesota Crookston shot 5-of-9 from behind the three-point line for 55.6 percent and 16-of-28 from the field for 57.1 percent in the opening period.

The Jimmies were led in the first half by 12 points from Wingo. Newton added nine and Brequan Tucker had seven. Jamestown connected on 14-of-23 of their shots from the field for 60.8 percent and 5-of-11 from beyond the arc for 44.5 percent in the first half.

The Golden Eagles will commence the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) season Nov. 30 against Bemidji State University at 4 p.m. at Lysaker Gymnasium in Crookston, Minn.
