Late Free Throws For MSU Moorhead Sink Golden Eagles 67-64

Box Score CROOKSTON, Minn.- The University of Minnesota, Crookston Golden Eagles drop their seventh straight game Saturday, losing 67-64 in an NSIC contest to Minnesota State University, Moorhead.  Slow starts to both half's for the Eagles helped bring the Dragons to a win late in the game as they overcame a deficit with 15 seconds left in the game. Dragons continue their winning streak bringing them to 9-6 in the NSIC and the Eagles to 2-13 in conference play.

Minnesota State University, Moorhead Dragons  came out strong in the first half by shooting 11 points in a row, lead by Marisa Yernatich who went 3-for-4 at the three point line in the first half.  The dragons also benefited from Kayce Charette in the first half who scored nine.  The 11 point streak ended by Brittani Wiese (Sr. G., Albertville, Minn.)  who had scored seven  for the Golden Eagles in the first half to help give UMC  opportunity to get ahead in the game.  Other leading scorers in the first half for the Eagles were Katrina Moenkedick (Fr. F,. Perham, Minn.) with eight points, and Ebony Livingston (So. G., Minneapolis, Minn.) who scored six points, going 2-of-3 on the three point line.

MSU Moorhead used offensive rebounding to their advantage to score in the first half, going 6-for-8 on the three point line.   UMC responded by the opportunities given to them from foul trouble from the Dragons. This put UMC in the bonus for the last six minutes and double bonus in the last three.  The Eagles shot 50% at the free throw line to keep them within reach of the Dragons, ending the first half with a score of 37-31 with the Dragons on top.

In the second half the Dragons offense stayed aggressive  with strategic passing, keeping the Golden Eagle defense on their toes. Wiese and Christine Thorn (Fr. G., St. Michael, Minn.) ended the shooting drought for UMC by gaining points on the free throw line and a jumper.   Yet there was struggle with turnovers for the Dragons as they had 20 turnovers and only going 1-of-8 at the three point line in the first 10 minutes of the second half.  The Eagles responded by Laurie Tyson (Sr. C., Rosemount, Minn.) and Jaya Perkins (R-Fr. G,. Lakeville, Minn.) coming out strong in the second half.  Tyson helped UMC climb back to a close score with rebounds and jumpers, while Perkins, who scored 10 points, brought the NSIC contest closer as she brought the Eagles up from a deficit,  allowing Wiese to steal the ball and make a layup for  the chance to tie up the game at 63-63.  Weise helped the Eagles gain the lead for the second time in the game by going  4-of-5 on the free throw line, making the score 64-63.  Aggressive defense gets the Eagles in trouble as fouls also brought the Dragons to the line, where Megan Strese gave the Dragons a lead that would bring them the 67-64 win in the conference match-up.

The Dragons were led by four double-figure scorers. Yernatich paced the team with 15 points and 3 treys while Charette added 12 points and 3 three-pointers. Strese finished 11 points and nine rebounds and Haley Thomforde had 10 points on the game. MSU Moorhead shot 47.3 % on the night and were 8-of-18 from three for 44.4 percent.

Wiese and Tyson were honored after the game for major milestones they accomplished earlier in the season. Wiese became the seventh person in program history to eclipse the 1,000 point mark for UMC and is now ranked fourth all-time in scoring for the Golden Eagles. Tyson became the career rebounding leader in UMC history surpassing Kari Score's previous mark.
