Box Score CROOKSTON, Minn. – The University of Minnesota, Crookston Golden Eagles dropped their sixth straight game Friday night, losing to the Northern State University Wolves 72-60 in their return to Lysaker Gymnasium. The Golden Eagle's starting line-up suffered from a poor shooting night for the first 35 minutes of the game, as well as starting 0-for-14 from the 3-point line. NSU improves to 13-4 (9-4 NSIC) while UMC falls to 5-12 (2-11 NSIC).
The first half featured back and forth action despite UMC shooting 0-for-12 from beyond the 3-point line. NSU went on a 10-0 run over the next two-and-a-half minutes, ending when
Carli Bunning (Sr., F, Boone, Iowa) scored five straight points for UMC, bringing the score to 15-19 with 9:53 left in the half. The Golden Eagles were aided by their bench which accounted for 19 points in the opening half, led by Bunning who had seven of her nine points to start the game.
Jaya Perkins (R-Fr., G, Lakeville, Minn) and
Christine Thorn (Fr., G, St. Michael, Minn) scored four points each, all coming in the first half.
UMC shot 63.6% from the field (14-of-22) in the first half as
Katrina Moenkedick (Fr., F, Perham, Minn.) tallied 10 of her 17 points on 7-of-11 (63.6%) shooting. Moenkedick scored six straight points during a 10-2 Golden Eagle run to bring UMC within one at 31-30 with 3:53 remaining. Northern State was led by Rachel Krogman with 14 points and six rebounds in the opening half. The Wolves scored the last five points to go in to halftime with a 39-33 lead.
The score remained close over the first five minutes of the second half, however the Wolves would begin to pull away with 15:48 remaining when they started a 8-0 run, bringing the score to 53-40. UMC would finally find the mark from 3-point land when Wiese connected with 8:31 remaining. Unfortunately for the Golden Eagles the team would go on a nearly six minute shooting drought from the field.
Alexa Thielman's (Fr., G, Buffalo, Minn) 3-pointer with 2:43 left ended both the scoring drought and a 10-0 Northern State run. Thielman notched seven points, six of them off 3-pointers. UMC would eventually cut the lead to 12, bringing the game to an end by a score of 72-60.
The Wolves had four players in double figures with Krogman scoring 18 (as well as 11 rebounds), Sarah Hints added 17, while Megan Mutchler and Alison Kusler each scored 12. Kusler also had eight steals for NSU. The wolves were 14-15 from the free-throw line, going 10-11 after entering the bonus with 6:19 left in the game.
The Golden Eagles return to action tomorrow, Saturday January 26
th at 4 pm to take on the Minnesota State University, Moorhead Dragons from Lysaker Gymnasium. The UMC men's game will follow with a scheduled tip time of 6 pm.
