Box Score 2 DULUTH, Minn. – The University of Minnesota, Crookston volleyball team picked up a split today to conclude the UMD Classic at Romano Gymnasium in Duluth, Minn. The Golden Eagles picked up a 3-0 (25-16, 25-22, 25-18) over Shippensburg University and then fell 3-0 (25-17, 25-12, 25-18) to No. 6 University of Minnesota Duluth. The match between UMD and UMC was a nonconference tilt. The Golden Eagles conclude the nonconference slate with a 4-3 mark.
In the first match of the day against Shippensburg,
Alexandra Skeeter (Jr., OH, Milwaukee, Wis.) and
Morgan VanGerpen (So., MH, Overland Park, Kan.) paced UMC on offense. Skeeter had 12 kills and hit .250 while VanGerpen hit .688 with 16 attempts on the match. In addition,
Brittany Looker (Jr., OH, Rochester, Minn.) had 10 kills and hit .229.
Paige Mitchell (R-Jr., S, West Palm Beach, Fla.) and
Lindsey Rees (R-Jr., S, Bronson, Mich.) continued to share the setting duties in
Lee Anderson's 6-2 system. Mitchell had 20 assists while Rees had 15.
Defensively,
Chelsea Wiesner (Jr., Lib., Rochester, Minn.) and Looker led the team with 16 digs. Both Looker and Skeeter had double-doubles on the match as Skeeter had 14 digs.
Amanda Swann (Sr., OH, Rochester Hills, Mich.) had 13 digs. The UMC defense held Shippensburg to a .145 hitting percentage.
Shippensburg was led by 14 kills from Jill Edwards, the
2011 Daktronics Atlantic Region Player of the Year. Andrea Heimsoth had 28 assists on the match.
Defensively, Lauren Murphy was stellar with 27 digs while Heimsoth added 12.
In the second match of the day the Golden Eagles were faced with the tough task of facing NCAA power UMD. The Golden Eagles held their own in set one and three but struggled in set two hitting -.088. The offense struggled overall hitting -.010 for the match. Five players had three kills apiece to lead the Golden Eagles. Rees led the squad with 10 assists.
Defensively, Wiesner paced the team with 13 digs while VanGerpen had three solo blocks and two block assists.
UMD was led by 14 kills by
2011 AVCA All-American pick Kate Lange. Ashley Hinsch paced the UMD offense with 34 assists as the team hit .235 as a team.
Defensively, Julie Rainey had 17 digs while Monica Turner had 1 solo block and six block assists. Lange had one solo block and five block assists.
Looker was the lone UMC player named to the
All-UMD Classic Tournament team prior to the conclusion of the tournament Saturday.
