DULUTH, Minn. – The University of Minnesota, Crookston volleyball team came back from a 2-0 deficit to take the third set against No. 19 Ferris State University but were unable to overcome the Bulldogs as they fell 3-1 (25-11, 25-18, 15-25, 25-18) on Friday afternoon at the UMD Classic at Romano Gymnasium in Duluth. The Golden Eagles fall to 3-2 on the season with the loss while Ferris State improves to 4-1 on the year.
The Bulldogs dominated the first set as they won decisively 25-11. In the second set, Ferris State came away with a 25-18 win. UMC hit .368 in the third set in order to help them to a 25-18 victory but the Golden Eagles were unable to continue with the comeback effort as they fell 25-18 in the fourth set to the Bulldogs.
The University of Minnesota, Crookston had a strong offensive effort overall outside of the first set in which they hit -.103. The Golden Eagles finished the match with a .210 attack percentage.
Brittany Looker (Jr., OH, Rochester, Minn.) led the team hitting .333 for the match. She had a double-double on the day with 16 kills and 15 digs. She also added four service aces. Senior
Amanda Swann (OH, Rochester Hills, Mich.) added 13 kills and hit .125. She also had a double-double with 14 digs and added one block assist.
Morgan VanGerpen (So., MH, Overland Park, Kan.) had six kills, two solo blocks and two block assists.
Alexandra Skeeter (Jr., OH, Milwaukee, Wis.) continued a strong start to the season with six kills and 11 digs.
Lindsey Rees (R-Jr., S, Bronson, Mich.) also played an integral role in the Golden Eagle attack as she dished out 32 assists on the afternoon.
Defensively, UMC was paced by
Chelsea Wiesner's (Jr., Lib., Rochester, Minn.) 21 digs along with Looker, Swann and Skeeter who also had double-digit digs and Van Gerpen's two solo blocks and two block assists.
Aly Brecht led Ferris State with 10 kills and hit .290 for the match. The Bulldogs hit .282 on the match including .524 in the first set which helped set the pace for Ferris State. In addition, Anne Sutton, a
2011 All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference First Team selection, notched nine kills, while Megan Vander Meer and Angi Kent each had eight kills. Samantha Fordyce, another
2011 All-GLIAC First Team selection, had 34 assists.
Defensively, Courtney Rehm paced the Bulldogs with 16 digs. Fordyce and Brandie Merren also had double-digit digs.
Friday afternoon's match pitted UMC head coach
Lee Anderson against his former boss Tia Brandel-Wilhelm.
The Golden Eagles will return to action as they face Shippensburg University at 1 p.m. and No. 6 University of Minnesota Duluth at 7 p.m.
