BEMIDJI, Minn. – The University of Minnesota, Crookston was down in all three sets on Tuesday night against Bemidji State University but fought back and was able to take the match 3-0 (25-23, 27-25, 25-21) over the Beavers. The Golden Eagles and Beavers were tied 36 different times in the match and the lead changed hands 17 times. The win was the first for UMC at BSU Gymnasium since Oct. 24, 2006. The Golden Eagles are 7-3 (3-0 NSIC) while Bemidji State falls to 3-7 (1-2 NSIC). UMC is 3-0 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference for the first time in school history. The Golden Eagles are one of three undefeated teams left in the conference along with University of Minnesota Duluth and Winona State University.
Amanda Swann (Sr., OH, Rochester Hills, Mich.) led UMC with 13 kills and hit .385 for the match.
Brittany Looker (So., OH, Rochester, Minn.) added eight kills.
Paige Mitchell (R-Jr., S, West Palm Beach, Fla.) led the Golden Eagles with 18 assists while
Lindsey Rees (R-Jr., S, Bronson, Mich.) had 11 assists. UMC hit .236 for the match with 39 total kills.
Defensively, the Golden Eagles had three players in double-figure digs. Looker led the way with 15 digs while
Chelsea Wiesner (Jr., Lib., Rochester, Minn.) added 14 and
Alexandra Skeeter (Jr., OH, Milwaukee, Wis.) had 10 digs.
Bethany Thompson led the Beavers with 17 kills and hit .255 for BSU who hit .122 as a team. Courtney Volkmann led the Beavers with 28 assists.
Defensively, BSU had 53 digs and was led by Elissa Christensen's 11 digs and Thompson's 10 digs.
The first set was a back-and-forth affair between the Golden Eagles and Beavers. Knotted 23-23 a service error by Volkmann of Bemidji State gave UMC the advantage 24-23. After a long rally for set point, Skeeter used a clutch kill to deliver the first set for the Golden Eagles. Swann led the team with four kills and hit .333 for the set while Looker also added four kills. Mitchell led the team with six assists. UMC hit .286 as a team in the first frame.
Defensively, the Golden Eagles were paced by Looker's eight digs in the first set.
After being down 14-9 mid-way through the second set, UMC secured nine of the next 11 points to go ahead 18-16 aided by four BSU attack errors and three kills from Swann. After the Beavers came back however and knotted the score at 25-25 but using a kill from Skeeter and a ball handling error from BSU's Volkmann.
UMC was again down 15-10 in the third set but rallied to knot up the match at 21-21 and used two kills from
Morgan VanGerpen (So., MH, Overland Park, Kan. and two attack errors to defeat Bemidji State 25-21.
The Golden Eagles will host Wayne State College and Augusutana College on Friday and Saturday in the team's first home matches of the season.
