BISMARCK, N.D. – The University of Minnesota, Crookston upended the University of Mary 3-0 (25-15, 25-23, 25-17) to open Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play on Friday night at the McDowell Activity Center in Bismarck, N.D. After taking the first set with relative ease, the Golden Eagles rallied in the second set and came back from an early deficit in the third set to upend the Marauders on their home court. UMC improves to 5-3 (1-0 NSIC). U-Mary falls to 0-8 (0-1 NSIC).
Brittany Looker (So., OH, Rochester, Minn.) led the Golden Eagles with her fourth double-double of the season with 11 kills and 11 digs.
Amanda Swann (Sr., OH, Rochester Hills, Mich.) added eight kills and hit .105. The team hit .147 for the match paced by the team's two setters,
Lindsey Rees (R-Jr., Bronson, Mich.) with 12 assists and
Paige Mitchell (R-Jr., West Palm Beach, Fla.) with 10 assists.
Defensively, Looker paced the team with 11 digs while
Chelsea Wiesner (Jr., Lib., Rochester, Minn.) added 10.
Alyssa Schneider (Jr., MH, Racine, Wis.) added one solo block and two block assists.
U-Mary was led on the match by Morgan Dake with six kills. She hit .118 for the match while the team hit .022. Emily Turkowski had 19 assists. Valerie Lesu led the Marauders defensively with 17 digs.
The Golden Eagles took the first set 25-15 over their foes from U-Mary. The Golden Eagles were led by three kills from Looker and two apiece from Schneider, Swann and
Alexandra Skeeter (Jr., OH, Milwaukee, Wis.). U-Mary had seven attack errors in the first set and were held to a .040 hitting percentage while UMC hit .194 as a team. The Golden Eagles raced out to a 5-0 lead in the set after the Marauders had four attack errors early on.
After being down 21-17 in the second set and looking like the match would be knotted 1-1, UMC used a rally that included two kills from Rees and three kills from Looker to come back and take the second set 25-23 from the Marauders.
The Golden Eagles were down 10-8 in the third set but again rallied to get out to a 13-10 lead with kills from Schneider, Looker and
Morgan VanGerpen (So., MH, Overland Park, Kan.). UMC used the rally to help catapult them to a 25-17 win in the third set.
UMC will head to Minot State University for a 7 p.m. tilt with the Beavers to continue play in the NSIC.
