Box Score ABERDEEN, S.D. – The University of Minnesota, Crookston volleyball team put a close to the 2012 season with a 3-0 (25-19, 25-12, 25-19) loss to Northern State University Saturday in Aberdeen, S.D. The Golden Eagles end the season with an 11-16 (7-13 NSIC) mark and finish in 11th place in the NSIC standings. Northern State concluded the season with a 18-10 (13-7 NSIC) mark and earned a NSIC Tournament berth Saturday as they finished fifth in the conference standings.
In the first set, Northern State got out to an 18-11 lead but the Golden Eagles closed it to 20-17, however the Wolves were able to hang on as they won the set 25-19. Northern State hit .273 to .212 for UMC led by five kills from Kelsey Chambers.
In the second set, the Wolves dominated from the start as they won the set 25-12. The Golden Eagles struggled in the frame hitting -.103 compared to Northern State who hit a dominating .500 in the set. UMC had eight errors in the second set. The Wolves were paced by Macey Finizio with five kills in the set.
In the final set, it was close early on but Northern State was able to come away with the set win 25-19 and win the match 3-0. UMC hit .111 in the set compared to .178 for the Wolves. Three players had two kills for the Golden Eagles as
Brittany Looker (So., OH, Rochester, Minn.),
Alexandra Skeeter (Jr., OH, Milwaukee, Wis.) and
Lindsey Rees (R-Jr., S, Bronson, Mich.) reached that mark. Northern State was paced by Kaleinani Kabalis' eight kills in just the third set.
Northern State out-hit UMC .283 to .082 on the match. The Golden Eagles were led by five kills from senior
Amanda Swann (OH, Rochester Hills, Mich.), who was playing her final match as a Golden Eagle. Skeeter and Looker each added four kills. Rees paced the offense with 11 assists.
Defensively,
Chelsea Wiesner (Jr., Lib., Rochester, Minn.) tallied 14 digs. Wiesner now has 1369 digs in her career. She has one season remaining for the Golden Eagles and needs just 103 digs to surpass Jaclyn Slepicka's mark for career digs. Defensively,
Morgan VanGerpen (So., MH, Overland Park, Kan.) added four block assists.
Swann, a four-year starter for the Golden Eagles, ends her career at UMC with 854 kills.
Northern State was led by Kablis with 15 kills. Chambers and Finizio each added 12 kills. Setter Drew Smith tallied 44 assists on the night.
Defensively, the Wolves had three players tally double-figure digs led by 18 from Ella Campbell, Kabalis completed a double-double with 16, as did chambers with 11 digs.
The Golden Eagles have won 23 matches in the last two seasons after winning none the season before signifying a great turnaround in the program. UMC loses only Swann from this year's team as they will return six seniors to lead next year's squad.
