MANKATO, Minn. – The University of Minnesota, Crookston couldn't mirror what they did last season as they fell 3-0 (25-14, 25-15, 25-23) to No. 13 Minnesota State University, Mankato. The Golden Eagles picked up an upset of the Mavericks, who were also ranked No. 13 at the time, last season 3-0 in Crookston. UMC falls to 9-12 (5-9 NSIC). Minnesota State improves to 16-6 (10-4 NSIC).
The Golden Eagles were led by
Amanda Swann (Sr., OH, Rochester Hills, Mich.), who had eight kills for the match.
Morgan VanGerpen (So., MH, Overland Park, Kan.) and
Brittany Looker (So., OH, Rochester, Minn.) each added four kills. UMC hit .085 with 24 kills and 16 errors on the night.
Paige Mitchell (R-Jr., S, West Palm Beach, Fla.) led the team with 16 assists.
Defensively, UMC was led by
Chelsea Wiesner (Jr., Lib., Rochester, Minn.) with 12 digs.
Minnesota State was led by Chelsea Fogarty with 14 kills and hit .367. Jill Storlie and Tiana Runck each added eight kills apiece. The Mavericks hit .274 as a team for the match with 43 kills and 17 errors. Ellie Van De Steeg set up the Minnesota State offense with 38 assists.
Defensively, the Mavericks were led by Samantha Dale's 15 digs and Kelli Elhardt's 14 digs. Courtney Steinhauser paced Minnesota State with four block assists.
The Mavericks came out and controlled play from the onset in the first set. They out-hit UMC .481 to .107 in the first set led by five kills from Storlie. Looker paced the Golden Eagles in the opening frame with three kills.
In the second set, the two teams went toe-to-toe for the first 16 points with the score knotted at 8-8 but the Mavericks took seven of the next nine points to set the tone for the rest of the set and take the win 25-15. Fogarty led Minnesota State with five kills and hit .444 in the set. UMC had eight errors in the second set. Their offense was paced by Swann's three kills.
The Golden Eagles had early control of the third set going up 6-1 but the Mavericks responded with a five point run to tie the set 6-6. It would be a nail-biter until the end as it was knotted 23-23. Kills from Fogarty and Van De Steeg gave Minnesota State a 25-23 win in the set and gave them a 3-0 victory. The Golden Eagles out-hit the Mavericks .128 to .091 in the set. Fogarty led Minnesota State with seven kills while Swann paced UMC with three.
The Golden Eagles will return home next weekend for a pair of NSIC matches at Lysaker Gymnasium. UMC will face Minot State University Oct. 26 and University of Mary Oct. 27.
