Golden Eagles are Comeback Queens of the Court

(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston Volleyball team played host to the St. Cloud State Huskies today in Lysaker Gymnasium. The Golden Eagles were relentless in their pursuit of the team's first NSIC victory of the season using comebacks in all three of the team's set victories. UMC saw themselves down 9-17 in set two before storming back on a 16-6 rally to defeat SCSU 25-23. In set four, Minnesota, Crookston was down 13-17 and put together a sensational 12-1 run to win the set 25-18. The fifth set saw UMC down 3-6 but again a 12-1 outburst by the Golden Eagles sent the Huskies home with a 3-2 (12-25, 25-23, 23-25, 25-18, 15-7) loss and UMC's first conference victory of the season.
 
Minnesota, Crookston was led by outstanding play from Morgan VanGerpen (MH, 6-0, Fr., Overland Park, Kan.) who led UMC with a career-high 13 kills and a match-high .409 (13K-4E-22TA) attack percentage. She also played strong in the front court tallying one solo block and three assisted blocks. Brittany Looker (OH, 5-10, Fr., Rochester, Minn.) followed VanGerpen with 12 kills while Amanda Swann (OH, 6-0, Jr., Rochester, Mich.) finished with 11 kills. Kelsey Matykowski (S, 5-7, Jr., Sun Prairie, Wis.) and Paige Mitchell (S, 5-11, So., West Palm Beach, Fla.) shared setter duties in the match. Matykowski finished with 27 assists followed by Mitchell's 10. Libero Chelsea Wiesner (DS, 5-8, So., Rochester, Minn.) finished the match with 21 defensive digs. The Golden Eagles as a team finished with eight service aces and 10 total blocks. In sets four and five, the score was tied 12 ties but the lead changed only twice as the Golden Eagles held the Huskies at bay in the five set victory.
 
St. Cloud State was led by Shelby Peterson's 17 kills. Setter Jennifer Waterman closed out the match with 40 assists. Libero Chelsea Nagle tallied 26 digs while Ellie Dietzen led SCSU with one solo block and five assisted blocks.
 
Minnesota, Crookston is 5-8 overall this season and 1-4 in conference play. St. Cloud State falls to 5-8 overall and 1-4 in the NSIC. The Golden Eagles return to the court on Tuesday, September 27 when they host the University of Sioux Falls in a non-conference match. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
