Golden Eagle Volleyball Climbs Back into the Win Column with 3-1 Victory Over Minot State

(Moorhead, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston Volleyball team entertained Minot State today at the Tharaldson Classic in Moorhead, Minn. The Golden Eagles gave the Beavers a little taste of what the NSIC will be like next year as Minnesota, Crookston downed Minot 3-1 (19-25, 27-25, 25-20, 25-21).
 
The Golden Eagles opened the match flat-footed and let the Beavers sneak away with a first set victory. In the following three sets, UMC held Minot to attack percentages of .085, .043, and .128. The team set a season-high in assists for the 2011 season with 51 in the match. Kelsey Matykowski (S, 5-7, Jr., Sun Prairie, Wis.) led the way with 44 assists, 11 digs and an impressive eight block assists. Brittany Looker (OH, 5-10, Fr., Rochester, Minn.) led the way offensively tying a game-high with 16 kills and a solid .308 (16K-4E-39TA) attack percentage. She finished in double-digits in digs with 13. Alexandra Skeeter (OH, 5-10, So., Milwaukee, Wis.) played a solid match with 10 kills, three service aces and 16 defensive digs. Defensive specialist Chelsea Wiesner (DS, 5-8, So., Rochester, Minn.) led all players with 21 defensive digs in the match. The team also combined for 11 total blocks in the match, the second best number of the season.
 
Minot State was led by Jen Dixon and Kelsey Wingo who had 16 kills each in the match. Emily Byrne tallied a game-high 48 assists and four service aces. Chelsey Bryant earned 16 digs from the defensive specialist position.
 
Minnesota, Crookston advances to 3-3 on the season. The Golden Eagles return to the court tonight to play St. Cloud State University at 5:30 p.m. All matches will be held at Alex Nemzek Fieldhouse on the MSU Moorhead campus.
