(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston Volleyball team hosted the #1 ranked team in the country in the University of Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs this evening. Even though UMD won 3-0 (25-15, 25-21, 25-20), the Golden Eagles took each set to the limit, forcing nine tie scores and outhitting the Bulldogs in set number two with nine kills and no attack errors. The 10 total attack errors in the match for UMC is tied for second lowest this season.
Morgan VanGerpen (MH, 6-0, Fr., Overland Park, Kan.) and
Brittany Looker (OH, 5-10, Fr., Rochester, Minn.) led the Golden Eagle offense against Duluth. VanGerpen had a stellar night with seven kills and no attack errors for a team-high .538 (7K-0E-13TA) attack percentage. She also added three block assists in the match. Looker finished with seven kills, two service aces and nine digs.
Paige Mitchell (S, 5-11, So., West Palm Beach, Fla.) finished with 15 assists while libero
Chelsea Wiesner (DS, 5-8, So., Rochester, Minn.) led the team with 12 defensive digs.
Minnesota Duluth was led by Kate Lange who tallied a match-high 21 kills and a solid .364 (21K-5E-44TA) attack percentage. She earned two service aces, a match-high two solo blocks and one block assist. Setter Eleena Iisakka finished with 44 assists and libero Julie Rainey earned 21 defensive digs.
Minnesota, Crookston moves to 11-16 overall this season and 5-12 in NSIC play. Minnesota Duluth advances to 26-1 overall and 17-0 in the NSIC. The Golden Eagles return to the court tomorrow to host Senior Day against Bemidji State University. First serve is scheduled for 3 p.m.
