Golden Eagle Volleyball Hosts Upper Iowa and Winona State This Friday and Saturday

(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston Volleyball team returns to Lysaker Gymnasium on Friday, October 28 and Saturday, October 29 to host Upper Iowa and Winona State. Match times are scheduled for 7 p.m. and 3 p.m. respectively.

Minnesota, Crookston (9-14, 3-10 NSIC)- The Golden Eagle Volleyball team played two matches this week and went 1-1 and 0-1 in NSIC play. UMC defeated Minot State on Tuesday night in the team's “Dig Pink” match 3-1 before falling to MSU Moorhead on Friday 3-0. Brittany Looker (OH, 5-10, Fr., Rochester, Minn.) and Katie Miedtke (MH, 5-10, So., Maple Grove, Minn.) led the Golden Eagle offense in the two matches. Looker finished with 28 kills (4.00 K/S) while Miedtke finished with 20 kills. Miedtke also finished with 10 total blocks in seven sets (1.43 Blk/S). Paige Mitchell (S, 5-11, So., West Palm Beach, Fla.) led the UMC setting core with 45 assists in seven sets played (6.43 A/S). Libero Chelsea Wiesner (DS, 5-8, So., Rochester, Minn.) recorded 42 defensive digs (6.00 Dig/S). Wiesner also led the team with four service aces. The Golden Eagles return to the court on October 28 and 29 when the team hosts Upper Iowa and Winona State. Matches are scheduled for 7 p.m. on Friday and 3 p.m. on Saturday.

Upper Iowa (13-11, 6-8 NSIC)-  the team hosted the #19 Mavericks of Minnesota State and the #9 Mustangs of Southwest Minnesota State. Upper Iowa played well in both matches with the national powers, but dropped four-set decisions on Friday and Saturday to fall 13-11 overall and 6-8 in NSIC play. On Friday night, Sara Vance became just the second member of the Thousand-Thousand Club at Upper Iowa. The senior from Tampa, Florida notched her 1,000th dig in the third set of tonight's loss to Minnesota State. Vance joins recent graduate, Shea Meyermann, as the only Peacock volleyball players in history to reach this milestone. Meyermann posted 1,305 kills and 1,360 digs in her career; Vance now has 1,135 kills and 1,026 digs with six matches left in her career. For the week, Vance led the offense with 39 kills, while Kristy Hinrichs and Nicky Brown added 35 and 34, respectively. Skylar Lesan dished out 122 assists in 13 sets (9.38/set) and added 7 kills, 23 digs and 8 blocks. On defense, Danielle Gernes was busy in the back row recording 68 digs (5.23/set), while Kayla Wagner (14 blocks) and Maryn Fulton (13 blocks) played big at the net.

Winona State (13-10, 7-7 NSIC)- Shannon McGowan, L, Sr., Naperville, IL (Nequa Valley) had a fantastic weekend for the Warriors, collecting 56 digs in two games. The senior collected 22 digs against Southwest Minnesota State Friday and added 34 the next day against Minnesota State. On the weekend she averaged 28 digs per match and 7.0 digs per game. She moved into second all-time on the WSU digs charts with her 22 digs against Southwest Minnesota State.
