(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston Volleyball team hosted Northern State University in a mid-week NSIC match-up tonight at Lysaker Gymnasium. The Golden Eagles took the first set 27-25 before the Wolves took sets two and three 25-16 and 25-22. NSU looked to close out the UMC in the fourth set when Northern went up 8-2 early. The Golden Eagles found themselves down 15-8 at the midway point of the set but
Danielle Rueter (OH, 5-9, Sr., Burlington, Wis.) responded with two quick kills that sparked Minnesota, Crookston to an11-4 run that was capped off by a Rueter ace that tied the game 19-19. The teams would play to seven ties scores with only one lead change in the set before UMC took the set victory 28-26 to force a set five. Northern State took an early lead in the final set as well going up 8-3. The Golden Eagles would again muster a comeback and get within 11-8, but it was the Wolves who took a 4-0 run to solidify the 15-8 set win and the 3-2 match victory.
The Golden Eagle offense was led by a foursome for the second time this season.
Amanda Swann (OH, 6-0, Jr., Rochester, Mich.),
Katie Miedtke (MH, 5-10, So., Maple Grove, Minn.),
Brittany Looker (OH, 5-10, Fr., Rochester, Minn.) and Rueter all finished the match with double-digit kills. Swann led UMC and tied a season-high with 15 kills. Miedtke followed Swann and also tied a season-high with 14 kills. Looker added 12 kills and Rueter earned a season-high in kills with 11.
Paige Mitchell (S, 5-11, So., West Palm Beach, Fla.) took over the fulltime setter duties after an injury and tallied a career-high 49 assists. Defensively,
Morgan VanGerpen (MH, 6-0, Fr., Overland Park, Kan.) played strong in the front recording one solo block and five assisted blocks. Libero
Chelsea Wiesner (DS, 5-8, So., Rochester, Minn.) led all defenders with 34 defensive digs.
Northern State was led by Konefesi Vaisigano who earned a match-high 19 kills. She was followed by teammate Carli Peterson who had 13 kills, two solo blocks and three block assists. Morgan Richardson earned a match-high 53 assists and added three service aces and seven block assists. Libero Ella Cambell earned 22 defensive digs on the night. Northern State as a team recorded 34 assisted block and 20 total team blocks in the match to help them to victory.
Minnesota, Crookston is 8-11 overall this season and 3-7 in conference play. Northern is 9-8 overall and 4-6 in the NSIC. The Golden Eagles go on the road on October 14 and 15 to play at Wayne State and Augustana. Match times are set for 7 p.m. in Wayne, Neb. and 5:30 p.m. in Sioux Falls, S.D. UMC returns home on Tuesday, October 18 to host Minot State in a non-conference “Dig Pink” match. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
