No. 6 Southwest Minnesota State Earns 3-0 Victory Over Minnesota, Crookston

(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston Volleyball team knocked off No. 13 Minnesota State yesterday evening and looked to make it back-to-back days taking match victories from ranked opponents. The Mustangs of Southwest Minnesota State entered the contest ranked sixth in the nation and fresh off a 3-0 victory over MSU Moorhead on Friday night. Other than the first set, SMSU's offense was hitting on all cylinders as the Mustang's attacked at a .343 (51K-14E-108TA) clip in the match and took the 3-0 NSIC victory (25-19, 25-17, 25-19).
 
Minnesota, Crookston was led on the evening by Alexandra Skeeter (OH, 5-10, So., Milwaukee, Wis.) who came in during the second and third sets to give UMC an offensive spark. She finished the match with seven kills and an outstanding .778 (7K-0E-9TA) attack percentage. Kelsey Matykowski (S, 5-7, Jr., Sun Prairie, Wis.) and Paige Mitchell (S, 5-11, So., West Palm Beach, Fla.) had another even night at the setter position with Mitchell finishing with 15 assists and Matykowski finishing with 14. Libero Chelsea Wiesner (DS, 5-8, So., Rochester, Minn.) led UMC with nine defensive digs while Katie Miedtke (MH, 5-10, So., Maple Grove, Minn.) finished with a match-high three block assists and one solo block.
 
SMSU was led by Mary Groth who tallied 17 kills. She was followed by Brooke Burmeister and Alyssa Taylor who had 13 and 10 kills respectively. Setter Cara Carson earned a match-high 44 assists while Rachel Westby finished with a match-high 15 defensive digs.
 
Minnesota, Crookston is 7-9 overall this season and 2-5 in conference play. SMSU advances to 12-4 overall and 6-1 in the NSIC. The Golden Eagles return to the court on Friday, October 7 and Saturday, October 8 when the team travels to Northern State and the University of Mary. Match times are scheduled for 7 p.m. on Friday and 4 p.m. on Saturday.
