Minnesota Crookston Softball Pounds Out 22 Hits in Split in Florida

Viera, Fla. -- Minnesota Crookston softball opened their Florida trip with a ton of offense, scoring 16 runs in two games on their way to an 11-3 win over Salem University and a 8-5 loss to Gannon University.

Minnesota Crookston moves to 3-13 on the season.

Game One

The Tigers would take a 3-0 lead, scoring a run in the first and then two in the second for an early multi-run advantage.

Megan Surgenor (Fr., C/P, Andover, Minn.) would get the Golden Eagles within two with an RBI double, scoring Chayse Doering (So., OF, Shakopee, Minn.). Surgenor would later score on a Madisen Yandle (So., SS, Lakeville, Minn.) RBI single.

More two out magic would come for the Golden Eagles in the third, as Doering would triple in Rayna French (Jr., C/UT, La Salle, Manitoba) to knot the game at three. The Golden Eagles would take a lead for good on a Gabrielle Gomez (So., P/1B, Lakewood, Calif.) RBI single.

Doering's outstanding game would continue, as she would score Emily Kalina (Fr., CF/LHP, Rice Lake, Wis.) with an RBI single. The big hit in the bottom of the fifth would come off the bat of Surgenor, who would triple in three for an 8-3 lead. Minnesota Crookston would head to the top of the sixth with a six run cushion.

The Golden Eagles would score two runs in the bottom of the sixth for the mercy-rule win.

Minnesota Crookston finished with 12 hits in the game, tying a season-high. Doering led the way with three, while Surgenor, Yandle and French each had two apiece.

Charlotte Dombrowski (Sr., P, Valparaiso, Ind.) was outstanding in relief, earning her first win of the season, going four innings, giving up just two hits and striking out three.

Game Two

It would be a quick turnaround for the Golden Eagles, who would play Gannon University about 20 minutes following game one.

The Knights would strike for two runs, with one coming in the first and one in the third.

The two run magic on the day would continue for the Golden Eagles, as they would knot the game up at two with a Surgenor single and a Yandle walk with the bases loaded.

In the bottom of the fifth, Madeline Murray (So., C/3B, Abilene, Kan.) would rope a triple over the left fielder to give the Golden Eagles a 4-2 lead. Murray would later come around to score on a Valerie VanZant (Fr., MIF, Salina, Kan.) single.

Gannon would score six runs with two outs in the fifth inning, using three Golden Eagle errors to take an 8-5 lead.

Minnesota Crookston would get two runners on in both the sixth and seventh innings, but were unable to score, as the Knights would win 8-5.

The Golden Eagles finished with 10 hits, led by two apiece Riley Blake (So., OF/P, Las Vegas, Nev,), Murray and Surgenor. The Golden Eagles left 11 runners on base.

Gomez went 4.2 innings of relief and was outstanding, albeit in a losing effort for the sophomore.
