Doering Delivers First Career Walk-Off As Golden Eagles Salvage Split with SMSU

Moorhead, Minn. -- Chayse Doering (So., OF, Shakopee, Minn.) delivered again, walking off Southwest Minnesota State in game two for a 4-3 Golden Eagles win to salvage a sweep for the second straight game.

Minnesota Crookston and Southwest Minnesota State split for the second straight season, with the Golden Eagles winning the second portion of the doubleheader both times.

Minnesota Crookston moves to 8-21 on the season.

Game One

The Golden Eagles would turn to Hannah Trzinski (So., P, Stevens Point, Wis.) for the second straight day in the circle and she would deliver early, throwing two scoreless innings early on.

In the second, Jocelyn Hernandez (So., OF, Tracy, Calif.) would come around to score on a wild pitch, after reaching third on her first triple of the season.

SMSU would answer with a run in the next half inning, but Rayna French (So., C, La Salle, Manitoba) would regain the lead for the Golden Eagles with an RBI double, scoring Hernandez, once again.

The Mustangs would tie the game up in the fifth on a solo shot and then use three errors in the final two innings to score six unanswered runs for the 7-2 win in game one.

The Golden Eagles finished with eight hits in the game, led by French and Megan Surgenor (Fr., OF/P, Andover, Minn.), who had three and two hits, respectively.

The Golden Eagles left nine runners on the basepaths.

Trzinski pitched well, going six innings, one inning behind her season high. Trzinski gave up two earned runs and walked five.

Game Two

Playing with house money, the Mustangs would score three runs in the third inning, scoring two of them unearned off of Charlotte Dombrowski (Sr., P, Valparaiso, Ind.).

The Golden Eagles would chip away in the fifth.

Surgenor would score on a Mustangs error, cutting the SMSU lead to 3-1.

Hernandez would continue her fantastic day with an RBI single through the left side, scoring Madeline Murray (So., C, Abilene, Kan.), cutting the lead to 3-2. Bryanna Decker (So., OF, Roseville, Calif.) would be thrown out trying to score on a wild pitch.

Trailing 3-2 in the seventh, Surgenor would reach on an infield single to open the inning and would score on a two out RBI triple from Madisen Yandle (So., SS, Lakeville, Minn.) to right center, tying the game at three.

Dombrowski would throw a clean eighth inning and the Golden Eagles would win it in the bottom of the eighth, as Doering would score Valerie VanZant (Fr., IF, Salina, Kan.) as the winning run.

The Golden Eagles finished with 10 hits, led by Surgenor and her perfect 3-3 day. Decker added a pair of hits.

For the second straight day, the senior Dombrowski was unbelievable in the circle, giving up just one earned run on eight hits and going all eight innings, the second time she's done that in her career. Dombrowski moves to 3-1 on the season.

What's Next

The Golden Eagles will head south next weekend for doubleheaders with Wayne State College and Augustana.
