Minnesota Crookston Baseball Set for Seven Games in Central Florida

CROOKSTON, Minn. - The University of Minnesota Crookston baseball team is set to play seven non-conference games over a nine-game stretch at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational. 

The Golden Eagles commence the trip Saturday, February 28 with a 2:30 p.m. C.T., tilt against Northwood University at Lake Myrtle Park field six in Auburndale, Fla. Minnesota Crookston continues the weekend Sunday, March 1 at 10 a.m. C.T., against Davis & Elkins College at Chain of Lakes Park field four in Winter Haven, Fla. The Golden Eagles wrap up their first three-game stretch in Florida Monday, March 2 at 9:30 a.m. C.T., versus Rockhurst University at Lake Myrtle Park field seven in Auburndale, Fla. 

Minnesota Crookston will return to action Thursday, March 5 at 2:30 p.m., at the Lake Myrtle Park main field against Wilmington University. The Golden Eagles will face West Virginia Wesleyan College Friday, March 6 at 8:30 a.m. C.T., at Chain of Lakes Park field three in Winter Haven, Fla. Minnesota Crookston takes on Saginaw Valley State University Saturday, March 7 at 8 a.m. C.T., at the Lake Myrtle Park main field. They conclude their Sunshine State excursion Sunday, March 8 at Chain of Lakes Park field one at 9 a.m. C.T.

The Golden Eagles enter Florida with a 6-5 (4-2 NSIC) mark. They took conference series against Southwest Minnesota State and Concordia-St. Paul 2-1. The Golden Eagles also have non-conference wins over Southwest Minnesota State and Concordia-St. Paul, and one over the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs.

Nate Heymann (Jr., RHP, Waimea, Hawai'i) has made an instant impact, going 2-1 with a 2.79 ERA in 9.2 innings, with eight strikeouts. Nate Benning (Jr., LHP, Browerville, Minn.) is coming off a win over Concordia-St. Paul. Southpaw Joey Connelly (Sr., LHP, Eden Prairie, Minn.) leads the team with three saves. Northwood has started their season with a record of 1-6. They are coming off a 40-22 mark, and a NCAA Division II World Series berth in Cary, N.C. They started their 2026 season off against Grand Valley University and Maryville. They have a batting average of .226, 23 runs scored, 11 doubles, and 18 RBI. Northwood is led by senior Caden Duryea, who is batting .417 with four runs scored, two doubles, and two RBI. Davis and Elkins have started off their season with a record of 1-6. They are averaging .295 in hitting, with 44 total runs, nine doubles, .811 OPS, seven home runs, and 38 RBI. Junior infielder Grant Mealey leads the way with a dominant .550 batting average, scoring four runs while adding three doubles, a home run, and eight RBI. Freshman outfielder and right‑handed pitcher Kenny Capria has been just as impressive, hitting .542 and providing a major spark at the top of the lineup with 11 runs scored, two doubles, a home run, and four RBI. Junior Zach Calef‑Boring rounds out the trio of top contributors, batting .400 with nine runs, three doubles, and four RBI, giving the Senators steady production and consistency at the plate.

At the mound Davis and Elkins had a 17.49 ERA in 47 innings pitched. Their pitching team has been highlighted by several strong early‑season contributors, led by Sophomore Kyle Ball has also been a steady presence on the mound, recording a 6.43 ERA over 7.0 innings with four walks. Joining them among the top performers is sophomore Diego Reyes, who has logged a team‑high 9.2 innings so far, going 1–1 with a 6.52 ERA and just two walks allowed.
