Minnesota Crookston Shows Balance Offensively and Strong Defense in Four Set Loss to Minnesota State

Mankato, Minn. -- Minnesota Crookston and Minnesota State combined for 137 total digs in a defensive battle, but Minnesota State ultimately defeated Minnesota Crookston in four sets (19-25, 20-25, 25-21, 14-25).

Minnesota Crookston falls to 3-13 (1-7 NSIC).

Set One

The Mavericks would take an early 3-0 lead, but the Golden Eagles would get back within two at 5-3 following the first of 13 kills from Madison Carsten (Sr., OH, Wadena, Minn.).

The Golden Eagles would trail 11-7, but kills by Carsten and Bella Peters (Fr., OH, Altona, Manitoba) would get the Golden Eagles back within one at 11-10.

A Mavericks error would tie the set at 12.

MSU would pull away from that point and win the opening set by six.

Set Two

MSU would take an early 7-2 lead in the set, but as has been common practice this season, the Golden Eagles would try and chip away at the deficit.

Trailing 11-7 for the second straight set, Brooklyn Gysbers (Fr., OH, White Bear Lake, Minn.) would collect a kill which would start a run that would get the Golden Eagles back within one following a kill from Peters.

Minnesota Crookston would get back within two twice in the second set, but MSU would win the set and take a commanding 2-0 lead in the match.

Set Three

The third set would be all Golden Eagles.

Peters would continue her outstanding match with back-to-back kills for an early 6-2 lead and Emma Malek (Sr., MH, Plainfield, Ill.) would give the Golden Eagles a 7-3 lead with one of her six kills.

This time leading 11-7, the Golden Eagles would score four straight, started by a Lexi Scharold (Jr., MH, Alexandria, Kent.) kill and bookended by an Ellery Ehresmann (So., S, Albany, Minn.) service ace.

The Mavericks would get back within three at 16-13, but another 3-0 run would give the Golden Eagles back the lead of six.

Carsten would end the set with another kill and we would head to a fourth set following the 25-21 win.

Set Four

In set four, the Golden Eagles would be unable to find any footing, falling 25-14 and losing the match in four sets.

Individual Stats

Carsten led the way once again with 13 kills and 12 digs, giving the senior her fifth double-double of the season and 28th of her career. With her 45 total attacks on the evening, Carsten sits alone in second place in Golden Eagle history for career attacks. Carizma Muth (Sr., OH, Randolph, Wis.) was outstanding as well, finishing with seven kills and 12 digs, her second straight match with 10 or more digs. Scharold, Malek and Peters each finished with six kills, while Gysbers added five in the match.

Three different Golden Eagles finished with 10 or more digs, as Kailee Waasdorp (Sr., DS, West Fargo, N.D.) was back to her old ways in her second match of the season, with 12 digs. Adrienne Venditto (So., DS, Bovey, Minn.) added nine digs.
