Minnesota Crookston Soccer Falls 1-0 to Mustangs Sunday

MARSHALL, Minn. - The University of Minnesota Crookston soccer team played their closest game with Southwest Minnesota State University since 2017 but fell 1-0 to the Mustangs. Brooke Wetterstrom scored the lone goal in the game off an assist from Sophia Bakri in the 44th minute to send the Mustangs to victory.

The Golden Eagles dropped to 1-5-1 (0-4-0 NSIC), while the Mustangs improved to 2-5-0 (13-0 NSIC). Southwest Minnesota State outshot Minnesota Crookston 14-10, with the Golden Eagles earning the edge on shots on goal 8-7.

Minnesota Crookston put together a flurry of chances in the early going of Sunday afternoon's tilt. The Golden Eagles notched eight shots, with seven shots on goal for a 17-minute stint with opportunities from Emmah Burnes (Jr., Tulare, Calif.), Sarah Burgum (two) (Sr., Mandan, N.D.), Tessa VanOverbeke (Jr., D, Hartford, S.D.), Andrea Cuenca Medina (So., MF, South St. Paul, Minn.),  Sydney Christopherson (So., Sioux Falls, S.D.), and Julia Finch (Sr., D, Woodbury, Minn.). The opportunities were staved off by Kennady Krebs in net. 

Minnesota Crookston would not have another shot on goal in the first half, and Wetterstrom would score in the 44th minute to give Southwest Minnesota a 1-0 edge.

The Golden Eagles struggled to generate chances early in the second frame, but were able to gain a shot on goal from Aleisha Cortez (Fr., MF, South St. Paul, Minn.) in the 86th minute, and another shot from Cortez in the final minute. 

Burgum paced Minnesota Crookston with three shots, two on goal. Cortez notched two shots. The Mustangs were guided by Wetterstrom with three shots. Karla Paredes-Nino tallied two shots. 

The Golden Eagles return to action for Homecoming Friday, October 3 against the University of Jamestown at 1 p.m.
